Default Odometer rollback?

Hopefully the group can give me some insight here. Just ran carfax on this ebay listing.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSC...QQcmdZViewItem

This is what Carfax had to say about the car. This car has an inconsitent odometer reading. Carfax states this could be a clerical error. This car has been in Texas for quite a while. Anyone know anything about it? Thoughts on the odometer rollback?

Thanks,
Ben

INCONSISTENT ODOMETER READING

Hmmm...hard to tell whether this reading represents an odometer rollback or a clerical error. Confirm the mileage with your dealer or qualified mechanic.

With the frequency of odometer gear failures alone, can one trust ANY 928's true mileage?

If I were interested in the car I'd factor that into the negotiations pending validation of factual records. And even that is open to interpretations.

It seams as though VDO had big problems w/the odometer gears w/their 80's odo's and speedometers. The gears get britle and break. It is possible that may have happened w/this car and it was repaired OR the pod was replaced. Not uncomon for sure. The best thing to do is look at the documentation provided w/the car and follow the service history as best you can.

Shoot, mine is broken now, based on my documentation it has been broken for at least 3-4 years IIRC.

Good luck, nice looking car, IIRC it was mentioned earlier in the week by another lister.

Sadly though, a broken odo gear doesn't make the numbers go from 53k in 1994 to 35k in 2007. If it smells like cologne leave it alone...

I'm curious as to what his explanation is on the carfax. If he responds I'll let you all know.

Very true. I just spoke with the seller, we're sorting out a few things and I may be able to track down the mechanic. Looks like the car has been in central Texas its whole life, so with a little digging I might be able to get some answers.
Looks like this car might e-bay beyond its real value. Or at least what she'd be worth to me. Keep you all posted on the findings.

The point is a broken 60,000 mi speedo might have been replaced with a ZERO miles odometer which means the car might have 95,000 miles depending on how far it was driven before and after it broke and a zero miles odo speedo was installed. We used to get a LOT of calls for low miles speedos when the cars were newer and or on lease I know nothing about this car.

I've heard of some folks whose odometers would turn and continually move at a 100 mile increment. I suppose the best course of action is to just ask the guy.

In Toronto I knew a guy who specialized in rolling back cars and the cost was anywhere from $60-$500 depending on the make model. He said the 928 was very easy to roll back.

Digital Dash can't be done? He was rolling back VW digital odometers from the 90's so it probably is not tough. Some cars have a pin security system but he said it just takes more time.

He was known as one of the best electrical guys in Toronto so he was a great guy to know owning a 928.

I would not rely on any odometer on any older model car, only rely on maintenance records. VDO odometers are extremely unreliable, I replaced the odometer gear on my 944 and I was amazed at how easy it was to change the mileage.

This is the response I received from the seller.

"I bought the car to resell it. Another ebayer informed me of the carfax today. It's unclear what happened, but apparently he bought it with 20k on it, and hardly drove it. I really doubt the miles are inaccurate, it is a very, very nice car, and if you see it in person you will agree with me.
Thank you.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Blaine (210)286-1847"

I don't know what to think about this one, carfax has been wrong in the past, but usually not to this degree.

There are a couple things that seemed strange to me. The hood insulation has been replaced, the radiator has been replaced and the intake is discolored and flaking. You normally won't see these things on a low mileage car. Possible that it's because of Texas heat but it seems strange to me.

I've been in contact with the seller a couple times. He's a strait forward guy and was ademate about retaining his ebay integrity. He is trying to get a hold of the guy he bought it from and get a clear answer. I just sent him the carfax. I'm also getting closer to tracking down the mechanic. I'm trying to get to San Antonio on monday for a look, mosty just to satisfy my curiosity and look through maintnance records. Keep you all informed. An Austin 928 guy knew the car, said it was maintained very well, but doubted the mileage. His thoughts were it being a well maintained 80k+ car. ]
