Its a 2 pin connector with a Blue & Brown wire one side and a Blue & Black/Blue the other - you need the Blue ones - they go to 12V when reverse is active. I know its a pain... how do you feel about taking out the passenger front & rear seats & lifting passenger side carpets for the shortest & neatest run.. (Not what you wanted to hear I'm sure....!)

Thanks Alan... It's not that big of a deal. I'm going to have to pull it anyway when I install the camera, so I'll just do it then. I was just hoping I could do it all at the CE panel. Thanks anyway. BTW, your primer is proving very useful - I just need to learn how to read relays one of these days.

Andrew-
I just saw this in Crutchfield and thought "That's perfect!" Looks good in the car, and you got it for way less than Crutchfield wants.

For the auto dimming, you may be able to hook it up to the light in the ashtray. That was what I was going to do for mine, but my light doesn't work. Or I got lazy, I can't remember which. In either case, i'll be interested to hear how you sorted that out.

Hmm, under $700, this might be moved up on my list. I'm getting spoiled by the GPS in the 540, and I'm not really a fan of the Alpine I have now.

The GPS antenna should work fine inside the car, and of course will be more aesthetically pleasing and stealthy. My Sirius antenna is another story though. I've tried putting that thing everywhere in the car and it just doesn't reliably pick up the signal. So back on the roof it went. Very irritating. Nice new toy by the way.

this DIVX is a video encoding format, no to be confused with the failed launch of a competing DVD pay per view platform with the same name some 10 years ago.

Andrews - you said

" BTW, the speed sender for 1991 is P15, not F15 as Alan had guessed."

Actually it wasn't a guess - I was quite certain of this because I looked at the diagram and had already done it myself...

Oh well - turns out its just that my eyesight isn't what it was (be very worried...).

I'll promise to put the new reading glasses on from now on when spelunking in the wiring diagrams...

P15 / F15 - whats the difference!

Mike - The Auto is really easy (at the central electric panel) - the manual is the hard one. I have mine wired as I described to Andrew for both my Sat Nav and rear-view auto-dim mirror. Its a bit tedious but really not that hard.

Certainly I'd do it this way this over adding switches on the shifter - its really not that bad...

Oh, I thought Andrew had an auto for some reason. Didn't really look.

And as he said, he's going to be running wires back there for the camera anyway sooo.... Nevermind.

Thanks... the antenna is magnetic, but based on the advice here, I think I'll put it inside on the A-pillar.

Great idea! Ash tray doesn't work as it's on all the time (tried that with the last head unit). But you're right, this should be very easy!

Andrew,

Is it me or does the face not sit flush with the rest of the center console? It looks like it sticks out 1/4"-1/2". But I also noticed that the Alpine in my car isnt flush either.

There isnt anyway to change the backlight color is there? I know some head units you can change the illumination color to match the OE instruments, wether they be blue, green, amber or red.

I like it, Andrew! This unit goes quite nicely with the 928 interior.

This unit is currently on overstock.com for more than you paid - I thought some time ago I had seen it or a similar one there for about $400, or maybe $499. Was probably refurbished, though.

The faceplate does stick out about a 3/8". Removed, the unit sits flush. I don't think you can change the LED color, but then I haven't played around with it too much. I know you can change the map colors on the LCD screen.

Really? That's weired! This unit was just released by JVC. They did have a DVD unit that looked similar, but did not have the NAV or the HDD, and I think that sold for about $400-$500. Maybe that was what you saw?
