Latest wheel cover mods: v.3 complete
Hi Everyone,
Following up on the input I received on earlier versions of the spare wheel cover in this thread , I made the following revisions to the design to make it more secure. I know it's not nearly as exciting as Watercooler's relay labels ( ), but bear with me...!!
I shipped a couple of these out to some Rennlisters today, so hopefully we'll get some feedback from them as users.
So, the main revision was to the wheel retention system. Previous versions relied on the entire case to hold the wheel down, but for v.3, I went with a lace-through strap.
One end of the strap is fixed, or anchored to the case, which then clips to an anchor point in the hatch area. The other end of that strap is free, and is laced through the wheel, as shown below, before exiting the case via a seam slit and attaching to another anchor point in the hatch area. This leaves the whole wheel depth available for stowing your pump and other goodies.
Slight modifications to stitching patterns to reinforce junctions, new hardware, and the addition of the embroidered Porsche crest completes the v.3 upgrade list.
I'm pretty happy with the more secure anchoring system, and the overall package looks really good, I think. It is still just a quick *click* to remove/install, and makes for an attractive way to carry the spare in the absence of space in the designated storage well (I use my spare well for a subwoofer and amp).
Any thoughts on this from anyone?

Have you tried reinstalling the spare into the cover after it has been inflated then deflated?
You may find that it no longer fits.

Randy - the trick is a couple of tie down straps cinched around the tread and a valve opener... don't rain on the parade

Randy,
Yes, the spare collapses back to it's original dimensions after being in use. Quickly and easily, too.
In fact, the whole cover issue came up after I got stranded on the road without one and Bigmac came to my rescue with his. His wheel cover fits perfectly!
Alan-- thanks! And I agree... to the part, especially!

Hmm, maybe make it large enough or expandable so the now flat wheel / tire fits?
