We punched all the pins out to the front, all the way. The 8mm pin was not stepped. Therefore there had to be two 6mm holes and one 8mm, so we have no orientation problems. Maybe this is a MY issue or only applies to dual disc.

Glenn, Andrew and Bill,
Thanks for the insight and views of the different years. I wrote the instruction aimed at the '85 since it's the only one I've seen, but I'll put in some comments about the other years in case.
I just got my parts in the mail and I think I'm going to give it a shot and see if I can get it all back together tonight. This should be good.

Just to add a data point: On my '90, I spent some headscratching time looking at the engine side of the flywheel while rotating the engine by hand and didn't see any holes other than those for the hex head bolts from the pressure plate. So there's no place to drive any of the PP locating pins further into the flywheel, to remove the PP, you just tap it off the three pins by rapping along the starter teeth.
I have now removed all the flywheel bolts (with no TT in place, it's child's play: 12 mm cheesehead held in a deep 13 mm impact socket, on a 12 inch extension, and the rattle gun out the back of the bellhousing. Rotated the engine so that the bolt at 6 o clock was accessable, then rotated 180o or so until all 9 are out. Took 5 minutes.
SO: The flywheel's ready to come off. I know Bill mentioned the earlier flywheels are indexed, does anyone know if this is true for the S4's? This photo is my indexing documentation just to be sure (gap in the teeth pointing at the starter housing), but before I pull it it'd be nice to know if there's some sort of indexing pin.
