I would think that the 85/86 cars would be the biggest market for these, No? The biggest problem I am afraid of is breaking the two-piece $hit off in the head when i am trying to remove them to replace with the new-improved ones. It can't be fun trying to drill a steel bolt out of an aluminum head! I have a feeling this will turn into a "engine pull" type of deal, for me anyway.

Daniel,

I received my sets yesterday and not only is the product first-class, but the packaging as well. Again, thank you very much for all of your time and effort.

EDIT : See updated info a few posts below concerning the "Long Version"

Let me attempt to shed some like on the issue of bolt size of the 85-86 vs S4 style bolt.

Greg is of course correct, however there is a "but".

The 85-86 and the S4 are indeed different diameters and different lengths.See first photo showing original 85/86, replacement 85/86 and S4 style (I am using the short version for comparison).

While the S4 style is definitely longer, that difference is made up via the S4 Style Cup washer and rubber grommet vs the 85/86 rubber coated washer(see photo 2). SHORT VERSION ONLY!

The S4 is also a larger diameter vs the 85/86 (see next photos) and the 85/86 rubber coated washer will not go on it (see last photo). This is a good thing because it should not be used on it since the later bolt is long so as to be used with the thicker cup washer/rubber grommet.

The solution for the SHORT VERSION ONLY is very simple in my opinion, when using the later S4 style bolts you MUST use the later style S4 Cup washer (part# 928.104.116.00 ) and rubber grommet (part#928.104.115.02 ). On top of that these 2 parts are much cheaper than the Porsche 85/86 washer anyway.

Daniel,

If you do plan to make the old 85/86 version I have some new ones here and can send them to you or give you the measurements.

I think I speak for all of the '85-'86'ers here when I say, 'After all this effort, I would be a fool not to purchase some of these finely machined examples of American ingenuity.'

When you get this ironed out I am all over these.

BTW- I would send you some examples and take you up on your offer of 'free ugrades' but I'm using mine right now.

Well, it looks like it is not needed - just plan on buying the correct washers/seals and use my bolts.

UPDATE and "partial retraction"

Knowing Porsche I thought I better double check my self to be sure the "long bolt version" produced the same results... of course it did not!!

The long versions of both the 85/86 and S4 are basically the same length (still different diameters). See photo, again original 85/86, replacement 85/86 and S4 original.

SO, while the S4 Cup Washer and Rubber grommet solves the short version issue, we are back to square one with the long version. Either getting larger diameter washers or drilling out your originals, or Daniel making a different diameter long version, OR Daniel , making a slightly longer version for the 85/86 so they can use the S4 Cup Washer/Grommet.

Confused yet????

Daniel,

This may help illustrate the "sealing surface alignment" of the 3 Long versions, again 85/86 old style, 85/86 replacement and S4.

Hope that helps.

So, to summarize, using Dan's new bolts:
To use on 85/86 you need to use the S4 cup washer and grommet on the short bolts and on the long bolts, use the 85/86 washers but drill them out to fit the new bolt.

Is that correct?

Thanks

The '85/'86 valve covers are not machined to accept the cup washers and seals from the later cars. I have seen this attempted and they always leak. This is not a solution.

Since the '87 on hardware is everywhere and relatively easy to get, I'd assumed that the hardware that was being produced was the very hard to get '85/'86 style.

I'd think the big market would be for this hardware, Daniel. The material is going to be the same. All that needs to be done is change a couple of dimensions and make two versions. Is that hard to do at this point?
