How come we don't use these newer VW relays?
These relays came on my 968...and appear to be the same (only better) than the relays you usually get from traditional sources. In fact, a year or so ago, I got this version of relay from a supplier but it was made in a 3rd world country...and the quality looked suspect. I'd much rather use these newer "name brand" relays. It's a common one for our cars. I've not approached the VW/Audi dealers yet on this but has anyone else been using these? If so, how do you source them?

I'm not against NOS or parts made in Bangladesh, but when I'm trucking down the Interstate or a lonely highway, I want all the reliability I can get. It's the same reason I won't be buying a Chinese made "Bosch Knockoff" fuel pump anytime soon. There are some "apparent" fuel pump bargains for our cars on eBay right now...but just where are the pumps made and how reliable are they?

It's no big deal to me if my wife chooses to carry a Chinese made Gucci bag...as long as the bottom doesn't fall out.

I would not hesitate to use branded relays from other sources at much lower prices. If you buy Hella or Bosch brand SPST or SPDT relay with 40A/30A contacts they will be good subsitutes for porsche 141 951 253b relays and will be <$10 each if you buy a few at a time...
You don't need Porsche, VW or Audi to put their names on them (hint: they don't actually make them).
These relays are called "Bosch" style relays for a reason...

I replaced all of my old style relays with those. They are cheaper from VW. The advantage to them is the VW dealer is 20 minutes away and the Porsche dealer is an hour. I think they only cost about $5 each.

I installed a VW blinker relay into my 928 (stolen from the wife's Scirocco). Needed to go somewhere on a sunday....so.....
Made my blinker flash like a disco strobe light. Blinked just fine in the Scirocco. Same "pattern" or wire diagram on the side of the realy. Different voltage or wattage rating?

There are some very rare relays that have the same pinout with differrent functions assigned (some Italian ones I know of - I'd expect there are French ones too!).
But this is almost universal - Bosch & Hella and as far as a I know all the cheaper asian ones are standard pin-out. It doesn't matter if the relays you get have an extra pin in the middle (all the relay sockets do also). The is for the normally closed contact set and is not used on a '53 type relay.

These are 50A/20A SPDT an excellent choice. This means the normally open contact set is 50A and the Normally closed contact set (not normally used) is 20A.
Lizard - only some Bosch relays come with the mounting tab its an option on most configs - it sure does make them easy to pull out though (and there is plenty of room above all the std relays)
BTW on the GTS the relays are plastic covered (but not yet molded) not the metallic cans (same part # though).
