Having the aluminium covered relays is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes it sucks when the cover slips off but on the other hand, if the relay is bad, you can simply remove the aluminium cover and squeeze the contact together with your fingers. If this fixes the problem, you can as a temporary measure, put a rubber band, electrical tape, zip tie, etc on it to keep the contact together. This can come really handy if you are in a pinch!

Then again, having a pair of relay jumpers will do the same.

For a '53 relay - just carry a spare (just a few $$) or even just use the one you sort of have (for the horn).

Piccardo - these ebay ones work out at $1.40 shipped at the current price & no bids!

This for a much better relay - but you'd need to want some spares!

Yes, old-timey flasher relays need to be matched to the current draw of the circuit. Changing bulb wattage will affect them too. 5 more watts in one bulb made my Saab turn signals flash at 2x the normal rate.

What does NOS stand for ?

Good quality relays - Bosch, Siemens, Hella are often available at electronics shops.

US built cars must also use relays - do they use a different pattern ?

Most local aftermarket suppliers can match up a relay for you, just watch the amp's and all will be ok-also most of the plastic covered ones are easier to get into than tne metal covered ones.

Yeah!
I can hardly hear my flasher either. I'd love to swap a relay and have a classy "ping" sound when my signal is flashing.

I think the VW relay that controls the windows one push down will work in our cars too.

The relay that works in the '98 and later cars, which also does one push down, might be a different story.

I posted a thread a few years back where I posited about switching out the relays, since they do all the work on the VW cars, and these are basically designed by the same people. I can't find the thread on the 928 board right now, but suddenly a bunch of early 928 owners enjoyed 928's with windows that behaved like the windows on Jetta's. I think a few of them messed around with the sunroof relay, and managed to get the sunroof to work like a Jetta sunroof.

I'm pretty sure it can be done....
