Did any shops try to talk you out of buying your first 928?

I am lucky I did not fullly realize how expensive a 928 could be. And I'm even luckier we have such a wonderful community here, where I've been helped so much. I don't think I could afford to keep it otherwise.

I questioned 2 Porsche repair shops before I started to look for a "keeper". I asked them if I had rocks in my head for wanting a 928 and both answers were similar. They said they were great cars but to be carefull on the previous owners maintenance and service history. Said if I got one that had been neglected or beat to hell to run away fast!! They said if I kept up with regular maintenance I would be rewarded with many happy returns behind the wheel. So far, they were right!!

Brad at BTM in Campbell, CA said "It's not too late...[to sell it and recoup my losses]" after I put about $600 into it. He's right, you know, but I'm hard-headed and decided instead to learn how to fix it myself.

And the guy who I took it to to get it smogged just shook his head the whole time --first time, when it didn't pass -- and told me I was going to have to replace the Fuel Distributor and that would cost me "thousands". It freaked me out a little and I definitely had second thoughts, but when Brad made a minor adjustment and I brought it back and it passed, he seemed pretty happy for me and squeezed out the best he could do for a compliment "at least you got a stick".

Absolutely! A good friend who owned a shop and dealership warned me that owning a 928 would require the ownership of an oil well or two, compared to my customized turbocharged 911 that I had at the time. I took him for his word (he's been a Porsche guy since the 1960s) and bought several cars from him over the years.

Edgy01, do you have photos of yours? I am keeping my eye out for 928's here in town and wonder whether I've seen yours. I recognize a handfull already.

Nope. Just told me what was wrong with the car and what needs fixing to pass MD Inspection.

I don't have a 928! I always wanted one but could never afford one. I just have a 997S now.

Ah, OK. I thought you meant you went ahead and bought one anyway.

I've found a great local mechanic BTW. Independent, 928 certified.

I asked a 911 shop owner in Vancouver - I believe the shop was called "Targa". He told me that he is a 911 guy but he also was very positive about 928's. He did say to be prepared to spend some in maintenance but he also said it was a very well made car. I was impressed that he did not slag the 928 as I had already made up my mind and probably would have been a little put off.
