Default Programable Wiper Relay

Hey guys... I just had to tell you about this!

A week or so ago I was prompted to finally order my VW programmable wiper delay relay as my tempostat doesn't seem to work. The relay is a direct swap for S4 and newer cars and possibly older cars too (I'm sure Alan can comment on this).

Basically, the way it works is if you put your stalk on intermittent, it will default to one wipe every 6 seconds. Alternatively, you can flip it to intermittent- get one wipe, then flip it off. The relay will now start counting the seconds (up to 30). When you flip it back on, the wiper now uses the time you waited as the pace to wipe. Pretty cool! But that's not why I'm writing this.

I ordered it from Parts4VWs.com (not affiliated).

Well yesterday I got the box. It was very nicely packed as expected, but after I pulled the relay from the box, I noticed something yellow in the bottom of the box. I though it was probably a junk flyer like you often times get with these mail order houses. I was wrong. As I fished it out, a big smile came across my face. It was a pack of peanut M&Ms! I thought what a brilliant way to build customer loyalty.

Anyway, I just had to tell you guys about this as it is so rare these days that a company goes out of their way to build that bond with a customer. So if you're considering getting this relay for your 928, I highly recommend these guys. I am a very satisfied customer!

BTW, the M&Ms were delicious!

Andrew,

Thanks for the tip.

I've always felt that the company that goes that extra step and recognizes that every customer has a choice of returning or not will be the one that is successful. Companies like this and 928 Motorsports that go out of their way to make that 'connection' will always get my return service, and my recommendations, like you just did. It's the best kind of advertisement.

Plus, what's better than free candy?

I also got the M&M's! Except I forgot to eat them. I wonder where that pack is?

Oh yeah, i'm learning to like this change. Sometimes it wipes when you don't expect - if you have it set for a really long delay, when you take it out of intermittent, it will wipe again. Or something like that. It's not terribly consistent. I had thought of changing back, but after a few more times in the rain, it's definitely a better design for getting a good interval.

Only problem is, the 540 with rain sensing wipers has completely spoiled me.

By tempostat you mean delayed wipers, right? Cause as far as I know Tempostat means Cruise Control.

I think Andrew probably meant to say potentiometer/rheostat given the context....

Just as a little useless piece of information..... my old '83 E23 BMW 735i had this same exact feature.

Yup, that's what I got from it too. It was a bit confusing when I first saw the tepostat in there but after re-reading the first paragraph it all made sence.

Nice work Andrew!

Wow, I didn't get M&Ms with mine -- that's what I get for going to the VW dealer!

Still, I'm very happy with the mod.

I had read an old thread about this, but the pictures showed that the 928 relay had some pins facing perpendicular from the VW relay. I had pm'd one of the people who wrote the thread but got no response (sometimes I want to ask a question, but don't want to bother everyone with something silly like a wiper delay). So now that this has been resurrected, does anyone know if the pins will fit OB 928 relay panels? I have an '86.
