Perhaps to protect the old cassette tapes of that day from melting. There weren't otherwise a lot of places to store them.

OK, I'll confess. I just popped out to the garage to take that one. One of my missions in life is to have a photo on hand for any occasion. But that's one I didn't have yet.
Now that I think of it... it's also captures the beam pattern of the new LED lighting...

Do keep your driving gloves at proper temps.....mor eof a gimick really.....I did hear of a "champagne cooler" conversion that takes the rear A/C and makes a mini frig out of it for champagne???? Never seen one though?

Not a gimmick, it's intended use is for keeping fine chocolates of western Europe at the desired cooler temperatures to avoid what some would consider...messy.
These kinds of items were/are considered the "little things" of higher luxury and were hardly an after thought for the worlds fastest, most luxurious GT car to tour the European country side at triple digit speeds. A fine chocolate bar as a snack to re-instill awareness to the lambskinned gloved driver was almost essential.
I think Porsche would have had a cow if they had known these cars would eventually fall into the hands of peasants such as we.

My old Vauxhall Omega (sold in the US as the Cadillac Catera) had this feaure too. It could be shut off, which was nice. My Wife's new Citroen (just ordered) will have a larger cooler too!

It's to keep snacks and/or beverages cool in hot weather. Great idea - it took other manufacturers 20 years to copy this...
I usually keep two water bottles in there. Not just once was I happy to have them - in cool temperature.

I like the beer idea, Ed. Good work. I think the box needs to be modded to hold a sixer.
Actually, I've used the box to store sandwiches on road trips.
