Smile Cup Holder: What I Did

I have no connection whatsoever with the vendor of an eBay listed cupholder but the cupholder being sold is like the ones I've installed in all my P-cars. I like this style because it folds out of the way and it doesn't look cheesy.

The ones I bought cost me waaay more than these are listed for...mine are German in mfg (I didn't look closely at these...make sure they're not Chinese plastic if you're interested).

Also, I did not mount mine on the door panel but rather moved the passenger's seat all the way forward..and used a few pop-rivits, with backing washers behind the panel, and rivited it to the passenger console side panel (the carpeting part). This way, if anyone ever wanted to remove them, they'd just need to drill out the rivits, smooth over the carpeting, and it would be very difficult to tell if they'd ever been there. I like this spot better than the door panel...but that's just me. I'm right handed...and if you're in the dating mode.....

They do make a double...but I've not gone there yet.

I know there are various types of cupholders "out there" but I like this one very well. Cup holders are good in that they help keep you from spilling McDs orangeade all over your carpeting. And these fold out of the way. If you don't mount it after you've moved the seat to the full forward position, you will spill anyway. Will it expand to accommodate a "Big Gulp?" Mine don't but I'm not that heavy of a drinker.

Ebay Item number: 170091103833 or 170092228961.

Sorry, I've never taken time to figure out how to link to Rennlist. It would probably take 3 minutes. I know...I know...

Back to the cup holders -

Do you have to drill holes in the door panel in order to securely mount them or do they use double-sided tape?

Randy - its on the console on the passenger side - attached to the carpetted cover. Harvey used rivets - but you can use short bolts and speed nuts on the back too. Advantage is that the holes don't show up if you remove it because you can fluff the carpet over them.

The door panel has few areas that are flat and in the right place for access (and the coffeee tends to splash when you move the door...) the passenger console side acually works pretty well. Mine is there and handles pretty big cups/bottles stable & within reach for those long drives.

I'm considering the double version that Dr Bob has - Carl (928 motorspots) carries them ~$110, my single one was ~$35 about 5 years ago

I still have the two singles from my 911, but have yet to mount them in my 928. I want to mount them on the doors, that worked just fine in my 911, just don't go opening or closing doors with a cup in there of course. My dilemma is "where" exactly on the door would be a safe bet to not be drilling into anything critical, wiring or hardware, etc.?? Any suggestions of where a safe door mount location would be? The dealer mounted the ones on my 911, but I'm not about to pay their prices just to mount a cup holder now.

Mel - the issue with a 928 is that there aren't many areas of the door that are flat. About the only areas I see that are that are feasible to reach and flat are:

1) The side of the plastic vent area (there are no electrics behind it just the pivoting vents)

2) The lower carpetted area below & forward of the door light (only thing behind there is the window motor - but its easy to stay away from)

I have short legs and the area next to the vent would be too close to my knees for comfort with the cup-holder in use. The lower carpeted area would not interfere but would be awkward to reach/see and may limit the size of drink due to the overhang....

Where else are you thinking about - I'm not seeing other alternatives but if you have an idea I'm sure we can tell you if there is anything behind there...?

Overall obviously I think the console works better. I can see a 911 has many more door options due to the relatively flatter surface.

I was just thinking about cup holders.... these look like Mercedes Benz cupholders that were used till 94. From my recollection they worked pretty nicely in my '82 240D. I had one on the drivers door and the only complaint was the occational knee jab. LOL, Just thought about it... I owned a 1982 Mercedes 240D and a 1982 928.... the slowest and fastest production cars for 1982! The Merc had 82hp without a/c and 53 with the air on.

Randy,

Whoa...that's TOOOO easy!! Can't you make it more difficult to post links so as to help me justify not doing this all this time? Thanks...you just saved me 2.5 minutes and others even more time by them not having to search. Also, I was a little jumpy about too blatently promoting someone's eBay stuff. I think I paid about $25 each for my cup holders a few years ago...probably Mercedes prices.

My cupholders are mounted on the console exactly like Alan's only I used pop rivits with a washer on the back side (to keep from tearing out the console fiber base) or risk having a screw tap into something electrical behind the console. You have to get behind the console piece to do this but that's very easy. I just couldn't see using the supplied screws without it tearing out.

Paul's right, now that he mentions it. These are the old Mercedes Benz cupholders.

Really, a cupholder is important in today's world (how many new cars DON"T have them?) However, I could never see how I could close the driver's door with a drink it it without splashing something out....plus it's tight quarters between the door panel and the steering wheel...plus it would bugger up the door panel. Not worth that. Alan's solution is best for at least two of us.

I bought mine online a few years ago. It's pretty sturdy but I did screw it to my console since I wanted it a little closer.

EEEK! Ouch!

I just grew longer arms instead!

Seriously its a little bit of a reach - but I only use it occasionally...

I understand the design concept of no cupholders but that is way easier to live with when there is always somewhere to stop for coffee or a cold drink virtually at the roadside... In the US/Canada especially in the west you can be driving for several hours between even halfway suitable stops... a person's still got to drink!

In many of these places its most inhospitable to even stop & get out of the car - too hot! - too cold! - too nowhere!

Alan
