I screwed it to the cosole since I don't think I'll ever remove it. If it breaks, I have a brand new one waiting as a replacement.

I've seen the fold out ones at Autozone (I think) and they look very similar to the ones posted here. The Elise/Exige folk love these because the car doesn't come with a cup holder. I'm surprised the 928, the greatest grand tourer of all time, doesn't have a cup holder.

This is the VW part that Carl now carries. I think it was a lot less when I bought it just after the car purchase, but like many things Euro it takes more of our smaller dollars to buy them these days.. It slides up onto the bottom edge of the carpeted side panel on the console. It's designed to have a couple screws through the panel but so far it's been OK without them I put maybe a couple 12oz pop cans inthere, no Big Gulps or monster slurpies.

So far it's the best, most 928-appropriate cupholder I've seen. I don't want to take too much away from the blocky-looking Autozone parts, but they don't reflect the flowing lines of the 928 that well, IMHO. OK, they look a lot like the original radio faceplate, but they would clash with the smooth lines of the replacement Blau that's in there now.

Style is everything. Well almost everything. The rest is "common".

It seems that Germans scoff at the idea of doing anything but driving and holding on when you're in a car. Cup holders were provided simply to meet the demands of less focused American drivers, and even my '92 BMW 525i doesn't have them. Not a chance they'd come in my '79 928.

But this is GT car, and like a previous poster said, sometimes there are very long distances between stops out west. And sometimes a tall iced beverage is necessary to stay hydrated. German's don't know about those things.

It would probably weigh it down too much. Like seat padding

LOL, I look forward to owning a sports car with something other than bare aluminum flooring

Doc Bob, I like the double barrel you added; I've not seen a fold-out like that before!

When I came to America and saw a man having coffee in his car I remember thinking this was the strangest place on earth I had ever encountered. I had never thought of doing such a thing, had never heard of it.

Use these in both cars. Easy in/out between seat and doesn't intrude on the passenger, since it sits on top of the bolster. Holds 2 H2O's or cans and "regular" cups from Carl's Jr...even holds some larger 32oz cups, although then it stretches into the 2nd compartment, but that's where I put my sunglasses anyway.

$7.99 at Target and no drilling required

Those cup holders referenced in the initial post from eBay are the same type as the one that I am planning to also put on the passenger side of the console. Seems to be working pretty well and in a black interior they are almost not noticeable in that spot when they are folded up.

Just in case you don't want to wait for them being shipped...I picked mine up at a West Marine boating store, they sell them in black and in white with hardware for $12.99. I know they have something like 400 stores in the country, so you should have one close by...used to work for them some time ago ;-)

P.S.: Heinrich - I had the same thoughts when I first moved to this country and saw people pulling out of Dunkin Donuts with their monster coffee's in the car...hahahaha...and now I am one of them :-P Ok, maybe not DD, but a fresh brewed cup of java from the local coffee shop...;-)

I long ago learned to drink out of bottles with removeable/replaceable screw on lids. I dont drink coffee, so i guess that would be a problem, but i will stick with bottles before I add one of those.

I gather you steer with the gas pedal. Cool.
