16v motors are awesome
I've had the privilige of working on a 16v motor (4.7) over the past week or so with Tom M., (T-belt/WP/MB Offset Keys/Front Seal/Cam seals/T-Stat/Waterbridge seals/Oil fill base gasket with custom baffle/ new belts/new hoses/ new plugs/new cap/new rotor.)
I've got to tell you, it's been a real joy working on this engine compared to the S4. Access to all the parts is for the most part very easy (I realize I'd have a different opinion if I had to replace cam cover gaskets or head gaskets), and the design is really just awesome. The engine lay out is great, and the spider, what a masterpiece. I got a real kick out of the spacing on the intake runners to give clearance for the stock plug wrench. The harness doesn't seem to get abused as badly as an S4 either. All the wiring, connectors, and plugs were in really good shape compared to the typical BBQ under an S4 hood.
It's an awesome design, I look forward to owning a variant at some point. You 16v'rs are sitting on a best kept secret.

Thanks Adam, I must confess the same feelings and hope to see some real money being spent on the early girls if I can get the preformance mods right.( I don't want to be the only 2 valve stroker guy on the Rennlist.) I am looking to achieve the same power as a GT or GTS from a 5 litre 2 valve engine. Only have 275 hp as yet. I am working on this as I type.
Remember these engines are lighter and I know it not a big thing but I think the centre of gravity might be better too, just look at how low the heads are in the engine bay.
The sounds these make are also more reasons to own one Your original point is right these are easy to work on, that makes things more enjoyable. I would love to see other members 2 valve projects. C'mon Guys 2 valves are great

I now fully understand why you've undertaken your project. To wring out the kind of HP numbers you're building for from one of these motors would make for a very nice package. It's a worthy undertaking, one that some day I would like to take on.

Totally agree...once you get a little familarity and understand the primary gotchas...it's pretty straightforward...also less 'crap' to take off to get to things..

actually, the S4 is easier for me. its nice to have all that alternator and powersterring pump, come down as one assembly to do the waterpump and or timing belt. thats one of the things i hate about the 84's. however, not having the S4 caps to deal with is a plus for the older years.
Im still a fan of the 2 valvers. it would be curious to see a 6.5 liter 2 valver someday. one big thing, is the cost of things when they go wrong. those cams in the cam towers is a thing of beauty. simple and no adjusting , cam chains ,etc. However, just dont try to do a cam change with the engine in the car like an S4. that was a pretty easy job compared to the 2 valver.
Now, the wait to get Scots Ljet 5 liter in the car!!!!

The spider when polished makes that engine about the best looking I have ever seen and the sound on a custom exhaust euro is amazing. Greg you are the trailblazer for power. My spare euro engine is apart and clean for now.
But I still can't get my hands into the tiny spaces in and around the engine. Tthe spark plug tool is very useful.

I have to agree. I found it pretty easy to disassemble and reassemble the intake and injectors.
As far as wires and hoses go, I was impressed as to how well the rubber and wires held up after 23 years. I got this car after was sitting parked next to the the Great South Bay for 6 years.
I guess I will check around and see what I can do to add some more ponies.
