SwayBar,
Thanks for the compliment. The color is Kiln Red Metallic. I had the wheels painted a 1-off color, which was derived by mixing Mercedes Austral Silver with a black tinter. I "borrowed" the idea from Greg Gray.
I can definately relate to your not liking the rear wheels tucked so far in -- in many cases spacers were not used. In my case, I was able to buy some 8" 951 phone dials from Rixter for the rear. In short, I wanted to keep the phone dial look, but wanted to fill the rear flares out. As for the wheel color, I took a risk and eyeballed the color as it was mixed -- my mental model told me it would look good with the Kiln Red.

Eclise,
Greetings from a "once upon a time" Moutaineer (MS in Chem, '64).
PUT APRIL 28th on your calendar for a drive to Hershey, PA. You'll most likely see Doc Mohr (who knows which one he will bring), me (GTS), and probably another 12-15 928 owners of various vintages there. There are usually one or two for sale.
Many of us enter the People's Choice Concours, so we and our cars are easy to find. The 928's are always grouped with all the other front engine models, and in '04, when the 968 was the featured model, there were about 50-60 944's and 968's present. Guess what model won all three trophys in the front engine group - Yep - 928's!!
This is probably the largest gathering of Porsches (not 928's) on the middle eastern area of the US. It is the Annual Central PA Region of PCA Swap Meet. They moved the date this year to
the last Saturday in April, as it has rained 6 out of the 7 years I've gone when it was the 3rd Saturday in May. Guess when it will probably rain this year!!! - Ha.
Hope to see you there.

Hi Eclise - you're on - if you don't have the 928 by July, bring the Lotus up - would love to see that car, and you may be one of one to boot! We'll figure a way to sneak you in under the PCA lunch tent!

btw, I plan to be in Hershey - need lots of little things for the 928. Who else will be there? Let's figure a place to hook up. I'll be driving my Mustang GT though - still not comfortable with the 928 for a longer drive until I fix a few more things....

Most of the 'Hate' mongers are P POOR Drivers anyway.
928's love to be driven hard and they are VERY underated by those who think they know.
They get real PO'D when I tell them that the best Porsche's are NOT Rear engine taildraggers, but Front engine 50/50, and 928.

Gary and Ed,
Sorry, fellas, I will definitely not be able to make the April event. I have to leave for Chicago that day. July is still possible, but if you guys would be interested in getting together in May, I would love to see your cars. As I mentioned, my pleasure time is necessarily postponed until the end of April. Which reminds me, I need to get to work!

Three anecdotes...
I love going to the track- Had a very nice 944- was all set to get a 951. Until I saw & HEARD a lone 928 just tearing up the track one day. When the pack would round the last turn,it sounded like a swarm of bees- then you heard above the din, this deep nasty-sounding, F'ing fire breathing DINOSAUR- almost scary! I thought it was cool as ****- had to get one!
The first night I got her home, my next door neighbor came over to take a look. His first comment was "oh, you got a Doctor's car"- (probably right- as they were one of the few professionals who could afford a $75K car 20 years ago). Anyway... I said "hop-in" I took him on a side road which parallelled our sub-development. I hit about 115 before standing on the brakes. I couldn't help but laugh to myself as I saw his hands fly up to the dash in a self preservation fear reaction. The next day another neighbor came by to see, and said "Hey- I heard you got a rocket ship"
I put an extra PCA decal on the rear pass. side window of my wife's S-Type Jag. She was @ the drive -through pharmacy the other day when it was spotted by the Pharmacist , who is also a PCA member. She told me that he seemed very interested & enthusiastic, and inquired about the type of Porsche which we owned. My wife said : "My husband has a 928-S4" . Upon hearing her response, he kind of rolled his eyes, and said rather boastfully-" I drive a Boxster"- to which my wife replied "Oh , that's such a cute little car".

Panzer, your wife's a keeper, just get her into a P car now.... Keep hoping I'm gonna get my wife to give up her Z4 for a Shark, she wants a Cayman
I was driving my 928 last week & as I was exiting the interstate I noticed in my rear view mirror a silver BMW M3 coming up fast as I slowed from the long offramp to pull onto the side road. I then moved over a few lanes to the left side turn lane & as the beemer went by, the 30ish aged driver gave me a extended arm out the window thumbs up! Hey, I get very little acknowledgement around here of any kind so that definately made my day!

Two stories... At the first Shark Treffen in ATL we had all our cars in a bank parking lot. This guy rolls through in a Corsica or something like that and asks how we got so many 928's running at the same time. I thought it was kinda funny actually.
I was at the local Sonic and a high school kid delivers the food and he's all wide eyed and says Wow! That is a cool car! What is it? To me, that shows how timeless the 928 design is. I still look at my car with awe. Every. Single. Day.
I've never had any derogatory comments (that I've heard). Whenever a stranger comes up it's always about how they love the car, or some story about how they got a ride in one and did 160 mph or something like that.

Eclise,
Have some fun with this! Pick out a nice 928 S4 or 85+ 928 (928 GT if you can afford it), get some nice 18 x 10 wheels and a supercharger or turbo for it. I think they will run and hide when challenged with a 550-600 hp supercharged 928 that looks sweeet!
With $7k for a 928 and $6k for some boost, you now are in the top 2% of the performance envelope.
Even a stock 85-86 928 has long legs from 65mph onward, I outran a 2001 mustang cobra by 2-3 car lengths from 65-145mph in my 86'.
One or more 928 members posted 0-60 in the 3 second range and 1/4 mile in mid 11's, I think you won't have any problem defending the 928's honor with that setup.
I have rode in the 996, and it sounds tame next to a 86+ 928 with the dual exhaust. They drive very tame next to a SC'd 928, which feels like its rearing up on its back legs and taking off like an arabian race horse!
People are ignorant, have different tastes, think they are purists, etc. The bottom line is the 928 is a very potent sports car if you know what your doing with it.
