Do you guys get any direct hate?
 

You all may remember me and my brief love affair with a 928 a few weeks ago. Let me say this and be done with it: I didn't get the car, I completely regret not getting it, and I can't stop thinking about it. So, moving on, I was wondering if any of you guys get any direct "hate," i.e. crude comments about the 928. This model seems to be the "red-headed step child" of the Porsche community, despite its long production run. I have 5 coworkers who own various Porsches, and when I asked them about the 928, I got some eyerolls and various other dismissals. Believe me, I defended the 928 with all my might, and I will continue to defend it when I finally get one :cheers: So, have any of you guys heard any negative comments towards your model?

Sure we all get some direct hate! BUT, it's usually from the assholes who have never owned a 928 and have never even had a ride in one. :thumbsup:
Tony Lapine said it best: “Give us credit that we learned a bit during the 20 or so years that we built the rear engine sports car and we had a few ideas how to improve on it. That's why 911 drivers don't like the 928, it doesn't feel like it’s handling properly because the onset of all the bad habits of the 911 are pushed much higher up the overall performance curve. It is very hard to make it do the bad things a 911 chassis will do and so it’s perceived to be sluggish or heavy. In fact if you look at the speedometer or tachometer you are actually eating up the terrain at a much higher level with more confidence. That was our goal.

What do your co workers have?

People often ridicule what they do not understand ! when such comments come up and they always seem to ...First ask if they EVER owned one ? then IF they have ever driven one ? ever even RIDE in one ? usually all you get are a lot of "Yea ,buts" ...You can then point out that they really do not known anything about 928s but hearsay ,rumor repeating what others have said. You can then point out that you always thought they were smarter than that !

One night at Siebkens in Elkhart Lake I found myself chatting with some guy wearing PCA gear head to toe. Found out he has been an instructor for at least 20 years. He went on to tell me what horrible track cars 928's are due to a lack of brake cooling ducts. It went downhill pretty fast after that. After showing him my car, he insisted those were aftermarket ducts. :banghead:

I like various other Porsche models and years...but I also have a firm grasp of Porsche’s history and understanding behind many of the models...And yes, I do kid the 911 guys about being a VW but it's all in fun really.

Ask them why they dislike the 928...and then ask them what they know about the 928...and also what they know about the 911's history or of they're preffered model. And during they’re long pause of silence as they search their small minds for a better answer enlighten them on the history of the 928…(Understanding you do know what you are talking about).

In some ways owning a Porsche in much like becoming an actor…some entertain the notion for ‘face time and status’ and others actually understand what it means to be a part of something great.

Reminds me of a time I was driving through a mall parking lot and this 30’s something guys screams ‘Get a real Porsh”…and this coming from someone who couldn’t even pronounce the name correctly.

Hmph, I expected you guys were hearing it, too. My coworkers have Caymans (2), 911, Cayenne, and one has an old Porsche two seater that I have no idea what it is; I couldn't hear him tell me the model number because the car was so loud when he was telling me about it. They own others, but those are the cars they drive to work.

I don't intend to use my (future) 928 as a race car, but rather a GT car. And really, my coworkers don't race their cars, they just drive back and forth to work, LOL.

This would be a great time for all your co-workers to form a group and learn more about each others models.

At this point, I am a 928 owner not a Porsche owner.

Ugh, that's awful.

Some of the comments I've heard are:
"You can tell which member of a Porsche crowd own 928's...they're the ones complaining about the repair costs."
"Slow" "Poor Handling"
"Ugliest Porsche ever made"

What the hell? Ugliest Porsche ever made? :nono: Most beautiful, more like it!

was it a 914, maybe? they used to call em volks-porsche.

LOL - I usually get I love your car or I hate it...but that's usually just cuz of the color...
It really is a love / hate thing..

I looked it up, but that's not it. I took a picture of it one day, I'll see if I can find it when I get back to my computer at home.

Try owning a two 'red-headed step-childs'! My 'other' Porsche is a 1968 912 which according to many non-knowing people is in the same boat. Screw-em I say! :)

People say that the 928 is 'heavy and slow (or is that fat and lazy ;) )' - I say that it's well-balanced, powerful and a great GT.

Others say the 912 is an underpowered 'poor-man's 911', I say that it has the body style and enginnering of the early 911 (more advanced than the 356) with the time-tested and bullet-proof 356 engine (early 911's had their issues).

I'm extremely proud in-fact to own both of these non-mainstream Porsche's. It's too easy to just go and buy what everyone else is buying - might as well be different.

It would appear that the most vociferous group of "haters" are most likely the ones questioning their choice. G
