I love those wheels, Scott! I had a poster of a Lamborghini Countach on my door when I was groing up; had a very similar type of wheel on it. Looks gorgious.

The Porsche owners I know are mostly just into driving and upgrading their cars. At work there are a mix of 911’s, 944's, Boxters, a Caymen, a couple Cayenne's and my 928's. I've been told someone else here has a 928 but I have never seen it. One guy has a genuine 930 that he restored. All of these guys (that I have met), accepted me right away and were genuinely interested in my cars. The guys with the 911’s were very friendly and were more like “how do you like your Porsche?”, “Have you joined PCA yet?” and “When are you going to PIR (Portland Track).

Anyway, the real smack talk I get (and the other Porsche guys too) is from a group of Corvette owners here at work. They are very arrogant and snobby. One guy that has a Z06 talks that he “eats Porsches for breakfast” and “that if you take the “R” out of Porsche and change O to U you have a “pusche."

The guy that gives me the grief is in my area and just after I purchased my 81 he went out and got a 2002 Corvette. Now all I hear is how Corvette is superior to ANY other car and how I made a bad mistake buying a Porsche.

Anyway, I love my cars and when someone starts talking crap about them I just turn them off like a dropped cell call.

Tom, you have truly found a unique and hereto previously unheard of treasure:

Eclise,
WHEN you get your 928, I do encourage you to take it to a PCA Driver's Ed event at some track. That's where I first learned to appreciate the 928. Took my '88 to several tracks in the northeast, and after a few learning sessions on the track, found quite a few of the 911's of the same vintage were frequently in front of me. SOME were courteous enough to give me a prompt point by, others couldn't let their ego's do that. Most of those 911 guys came over to my 928 (often the only one) sometime during the event and asked about it - TOTALLY stock, with street tires. Then, when they discovered it was an AUTOMATIC transmission car, they were totally amazed, and frequently walked away shaking their heads (also a bit shocked that the driver was relatively new to track driving, and past 65 years old).
One other reason I own 928's ('89 5 speed for going to, from, and on the track, and a '94 GTS for 3 season driving) is the result of a conversation I had with Hans Mezger, designer of the 911 and 917 engines over lunch at Weissach one day in the mid-80's. He and his fellow manager both agreed that the 911 SC was their best car for short drives on twisty roads, but if you wanted to go very far and for very long, the 928 was best car Porsche had produced (to that date).
Also, ask you buddies how many people drive their 911's 250-600 miles to a track, then drive them on the track??? - I've found NOBODY does that with an air cooled 911. The newer 996 and 997 twin turbo's are SO fast, they are truly in a different league for track driving.
Oh yes, the original and only PO of my GTS was a man with assets that probably exceeded $50 million. He drove the 928 GTS for 11 years and put 60K miles on it. Can't find many aircooled rear engine cars whose wealthy owners have enjoyed driving them enough to use them that much!!
Anyway, keep looking, and if you get a good 928 and maintain it well, you'll never WANT to sell it. (By the way, I do love the Elise, and have been tempted several times to buy an early Elan).

Gary Knox (currently on 5th and 6th 928's over past 10 years).

H - I've told him I know several Porsche owners that would be glad to accomodate him at the track. He has avoided the invitation so far, but continues the barbs. I will pass on your invitation!

Eclise - Some of the other vette owners (so I'm told) don't like the Z06 guy and wish he would keep his mouth shut. I heard a rumor that he pissed off a VP by saying his BMW was nothing more than a German Chevy for drug dealers! Career Limiting Move #1

Eclise;

Seems the higher up the financial ladder people get the more opinionated they become. I guess wealth has its privileges. And how many times have these same privileged people bought the 911 for its status? Very few are actually car people. My retort to those people is 'opinions are like ********, and you seem very opinionated'. That usually shuts them up for good. Or I often offer to give them a ride, those that take me up on it never complain again. Muhahahahaa Matter of fact, one Caymen owner asked if I could make his car do that.

I invite you out to my place here in central Pa. I have a nice selection of 928's we can toss around. We can most definitely gets your thirst quenched. And bring the Elise, my Esprit would like to meet it.

+1

opinions are like buttholes - everyone has one and some stink more than others... I don't need anyone to approve my choices nor do I feel the need to judge anyone elses. the pecker measuring crowd only demonstrates their lack of self confidence by continually attempting to confirm/justify/rationalize their choices...

many stock 911/gt2r/gt3r/etc can easily run circles around all but the most highly modded 928 - so one does have to give credit to awesome machines and what many manufacturers have accomplished over the years (except cheby for making the tahoe & cavilier.... or dodge for the cordoba, rumble bee or AMC's gremlin, etc, etc) lol

but as long as the big 3 (or is it 5 now?) can keep my old uboat running and PCA let's me run it I'm happy.

now - shouldn't someone be working on a drysump that'll let us keep our stupid air pumps instead of worrying about this nonsense??

Simply beautiful; I agree, your car is an exception.

Is the color coral?

Typically though, phone dials do not look nearly as good as they're usually flat and oxidized looking (..just like an older set of flats that have not been maintained).

The compliments my car receives is endless around here. The local 911 owners I have encountered are really cool....they like and respect the model. And the feeling is mutual, 911s are wickedly fun and look great. Always a wave or light flash when passing them on the streets. Boxster owners are generally clueless though....Cayenne guys equally so.

Speaking of Corvettes, my buddy owns a new Z06. What a beast! We did a fun drive a few months back and we lit it up a couple of times. Yeah, I got dusted pretty good, but he was impressed by how well I kept up with him.

I've had my 928 (same one) for over 22 years. It's not my daily driver but when I take it out, it always draws positive comments everywhere I go with it. I don't think I've ever heard a bad comment about it other than in gest with 911 guys but even then, I've never been snubbed, it's more of an adverserial kidding born of mutual respect than real disdain.

The ironic thing is that when I bought my 928, I was really looking for a 911 but it was the transition point where the 911SC's that I could afford, were much less desireable than the newer 911 Carrera's that I couldn't afford ( I want to say 176 hp versus 234 if memory serves and a bunch of other improvements)- This car came up, I liked it immediatly and I bought it knowing very little about it other that it felt extremely strong compared to everything else I had driven. I've had it a long time and from time to time, I get the urge to try and replace it. Each and everytime I've gone out with eager anticipation to test drive more exciting, newer cars to replace it with, I come back disappointed that they are no more impressive than my old 928 and, often even less so. So, I've kept it and to be honest, I derive a lot of pleasure each and every time I open my garage door just to see it... It still looks fabulous to my way of thinking and is truelly timeless to my eyes. There are faster cars out there - there always will be. But there are very few cars that do so much, so well, looking this good for as long as the 928 has been doing it.

I love and respect all cars with character. I wouldn't snub any mans car and find it hard to understand why anyone would look down on any man's passion. I've seen some obscure cars that guys have just poured their hearts into and I can't help but respect that. We find what moves us, and invest in it for "our" enjoyment. If someone else hates us for it or tries to belittle us, consider that an easy way to identifying those whose opinon's are inconsequential. I try to teach my kids that the poeple who's opinion "really matters", would never treat another person that way... thier humility wouldn't allow it.

Well, I don't know if this helps you guys feel better about yourselves, but I just stopped in here from the 924/944/968 forum and figured I'd add my two cents into this conversation.

I consider myself a "car guy". I've been working on cars in my past time for about 10 years now (since I graduated from high school). I make my living as a software developer though. In the past 10 years, I've gone from thinking that an oil change means that you "top off" the crank case with 14 quarts of oil (yeah... I know...) to rebuilding multiple engines of various types, and having completed several ground-up and frame-off restorations.

As a car guy, I think I have a certain level of knowledge of cars. I know what's BS, and what isn't (for the most part). Having been a NON Porsche owner until just 6 months ago (I'm restoring a 1984 Porsche 944 HERE: 1984 Porsche 944 - Restoration ) I feel that I can give a good "outside", general perspective on Porsches.

I had always heard GOOD things about the Porsche 928. In particular, the comments I had always heard was that it was a VERY powerful Porsche (in most cases, more so than the 911 because it had a HUGE v8 in it), but that it didn't stick around for very long. Knowing what I know now about Porsches... the car was in production for 20 years, and that is a LONG time to be in production.

I can't honestly say I've ever heard of anyone saying BAD things about the 928.

Of the few bad things I've heard, it's that the 924 was a horrible car (which may not necessarily be true, even if it doesn't have an honest to God Porsche motor in it).

I think I'd very much like to get a 928 one day, but I've got to get this 944 finished first...

As far as people yelling out negative comments to other people about their cars? What can I say... anyone who feels the need to tell a complete stranger that their car sucks, must have their own issues. I mean, what possible importance could it be to the person yelling the comments? Why should he care anyway? It seems to me that if he saying something negative, he probably just wants to make you feel bad, maybe in part because he's driving a Corolla, or some other significantly inferior car?

What kind of person comes up with something like that? Did he stay up late, laying in bed thinking about Porsches and manipulating spelling to come up with that? I'm surprised he didn't just call you a great big poopy-pants. You could ask him what you get if you take the "COR" out of Corvette and replace it with "CHE" if things like that are what he considers important.

Scott, Gary, Ed, and all you other Pitt folk,

As some of you may know, I live in Morgantown, WV. I would LOVE to see your 928s. I know there is a show in July, and I will (depending on the work schedule) make it there. I won't get the Elise out until May--not because of the weather, but I have some big obligations to fulfill until the end of April, so no pleasure for me until then. I would love to come up and meet you guys and your cars, drink a beer or two, whatever

Also, if you guys hear of anything up for sale in the area, let me know. I think finding another in WV is pretty unlikely. I've got to find a stick, though, I just don't think I can go back to an auto tranny.

LOL, I just got a copy of "Risky Business." Yeah, I want a 928 pretty bad.
