Matt:

Order the bushing. You know you will need it at some point, if not now. Then come on over and we will install the bushing. If that doesn't work, order a rear flexplate.

Unfortunately there is no flexplate, as killav (and even Rog!!! ) mentioned; the TT attaches directly to the input shaft on the trans. Did you check both pinch bolts?

Dave:

OK, we'll skip the flexplate then, but I think if we could install one in the rear, the rattle would go away for sure.

We didn't check the torque on the pinch bolts, but I did look at them closely and there is no evidence that they are loose. We'll snug them up anyway.

Ball Cup Bushing has been ordered from 928 International While driving the car today I wanted to note that this noise is not really audible when the car is cold or even driven a short distance. It must be brought up to operating temp and driven.

A few weeks ago we were going to look and it was rattling away, we took a look at another car first and when my car had cooled off a bit the noise was not loud enough to take a look. It also seems to be loudest when you let off the gas after revving it up a bit, as the rpm’s drop to idle you get the rattle. Never hear it while driving just in neutral with the clutch disengaged.

Boy Matt, the symptons you describe sound just like the old hardened exhaust shields on american cars. I don't think we have anything like that on the S4 do we?

Also sounds a little like a clutch disc.

Hey Charley,

Everything transmits right down the torque tube, then add that it only really bad when it’s hot. Will get a handle on it here at some point I’m leaning towards clutch as well.

Yeah, I forgot about that - only audible when the car is warmed up completely.

Nicole has a rattle that goes away as soon as the car warms up.
