Default turn signal cancel problem... left turn only

Did a search on this, and it appears failed steering shaft bearings are sometimes the culprit.

The steering wheel on my '91 S4 (88k miles) does not seem to have any excessive play in the bearings. When signalling/turning right, the canceller works everytime. When turning left, it cancels maybe 1/2 of the time. When it does not cancel, you can see the lever sort of "try" to return to "off" but not quite make it.

If it were the bearings, the problem would happen turning each direction, correct? I'm thinking that I need a new combo-switch if I want it to work right.

I had a simmilar problem with all my 928s ('83, '85). At best, they wont cancel or at worst they wont even stay at the turn positon, have to hold it by hand to keep it singaling. In any case, I think this is a common problem with the 928s. If you remove your steering wheel, you will see the turn signal mechanism. There is a little tab that if you touch, while the indicator arm is down, will cancell it. The only problem is that the entire thing is riveted together and is not ment to be serviced. Even if you manage to take it apart, you will probalby find that a plastic tab has broken off and its there is nothing that you can do.

I would just try to buy another good used one or just learn to live with the way it is.

Be careful here. There is a differnence between the 83-84 and the 91. The 91 has a clock spring - I think that is what they call it for the air bag. These are made of plastic and can crack and break. When they do all kinds of bad things happen like the horn going off randomly.

On the early cars the problem can be in the switch itself where it will cancel in one direction and not the other. Sometimes it can be adjusted and some times the switch just needs to be replaced. One the early cars the position of the switch is adjusted foward and back. Someearly steering wheels have a separate plastic piece that can be put on in one of three positions. If it is put on wrong the lights will cancel in one direction and not the other.

ok, maybe this helps:

The failure to stay in position is related to a broken tab inside the assembly. I don't think there is any other option than to replace.
The failure to cancel is something different:

A quick fix is tape a little duck tape on the steeringwheel tab. A better fix is modify the assembly lever to make it respond better, and obviously replacing with a new one is an option. Also get a good look at the tab on the wheel assembly. Oh uh... Dan already mentioned: there are a few different versions, I agree.

Are you asking me out? Sorry, I'm not kind of guy. Although, I suppose I could make a concession if you were to offer up a tutorial detailing the "Whats, Hows and Whys" of the "Clock Spring" and how it relates to turning left in Seattle.

Dinner, beer, awesome. My shop is on Pine/Harvard on Cap Hill and there are food/beverage suppliers seemingly in every direction. I'm down for such an event, yes.
