You have tried the rest now drive the best.
Simple - I have one of each of the various iterations of this great car, if not I have had the pleasure of driving it at sometime - the GTS is by far the best overall package for what the car was designed to do in its standard form and surpasses anything prior to its arrival.
The S4 is the best bang for the $ I agree, but drive a GTS and then dream of owning one for ever more. Some of us are lucky to have one and I wish I had two or three.

No offense to GTS owners, as I aspire to be one myself someday, but I've never liked the reflector strip on the rear cap. It's to the point that I'd want to replace the rear cap with one painted to match from a S4/GT. Am I the only one who thinks this way?

Not at all, there is a 93 in Portland with the S4 cover that is gorgeous!!

I myself would not stop at the bumper cover though, I would probably pull the GTS engine and drop in a supercharged S4...

So probably best if I don't buy one as the purists might take it wrong...

There, ... there ...
over the sound of the exhaust,
I can hear the whining.

It's like the smell of napalm in the morning.

Well, thanks alot guys

You've opened up the Pandora's box for me. I was originally looking for a nice 928S4 or 928GT.....

Now, you've made it more complicated for me and I will also have to start searching for 928GTSs as well

Arrrrrgh! Here we go with another "Is A GTS Worth It Thread?!"

OK. My .02:

Disclaimer: I am not a wrench. I pay to have all my work done by folks who actually know what they're doing. I may fit Keith's definition of a typical GTS owner.

I have also not owned an S4 or a GT. So I cannot speak to your specific comparison.

Having said that...

1. I bought a GTS before I knew there was a Rennlist - or a 928 community. I even bought mine before I knew I was a dentist's wife! So I wasn't trying to impress anyone.

2. For me it was all about the looks. I just think the wider rear end with the fender flares and the body-colored wing is how the 928 should have looked all along. And when I found a red one without the rub strip and for a reasonable price... I could not resist!

3. Comparing the GTS to my previous 86.5:

The power/acceleration is significantly better

The handling and roadholding on the twisties is noticeably better - perhaps due to the wider stance. At any rate, it's much more confidence-inspiring.

It just seems a good bit more refined.

Is it enough better than an S4 or GT to justify the price premium? I dunno. That's a subjective question that can only be answered by an individual buyer. For me it was. And I have not been disappointed.

If your only interest is buying power and handling as cheaply as possible, why even consider a 928? Buy a cheap 951. You can probably trick it up power and handling-wise cheaper than an S4 or GT.

Anyone who owns a GTS wants to be envied by the rest of the 928 community! In fact, the cars are detuned from what was origally planned for the GTS (since it was a dog of a seller and priced out of the stratusphere and Porsche wasn't going phase out the "fastest" car in their line up), the wider stance was to compensate for the squirrelyness of the 928 getting loose in the corners with the added power and those ridiculous flares are like parachute pants having no usefulness but to slow the car down at speed. They weigh more than any other 928 and it just makes no reasonable sense to own one.

I say buy an 87 or 88 car, strap an iron lung on it and barf flames out of the exhaust to prove that GTS's are for wannabe's and dentists wives!

"I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a GTS rolls in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop starin...."

so maybe to summarize:

ultimate sophistication and refinement of the model and best driving: GTS, obviously

fastest stock: GTS, but any S4 with a SC is way faster

best looks: subjective, most porsche addicts would say GTS, but I suspect regular people couldn't tell the difference between the two, and wouldn't view the visual differences as material, one way of the other

best bang for people without money to burn: Not the GTS. What is? depends on price point: to me having looked over the entire model history, clearly the early S4's are the best bang for the buck. earlier low mileage clean examples are priced about the same or more than a pretty good S4. Dog earlier models are half to two thirds of dog S4's

best investment: probably many opinions on that: but given the price differential from the S4, and the fact that the latest cars are only 11 years old. it seems that the cars may still be depreciating, like most 11 year old exotics (e.g. ferrari 355's and 348's), yea, yea there are only 400 of them, but rarity alone doesn't necessarily do it (take the jalpa for example, only 400 or so and they're not worth more than the contac, of which there are many more, with a much longer model run, or even the comparable Ferrari 328, of which there are thousands)

and let's not forget that to a general car collector the model had a 16 or 17 year run. So a 928 fanatic might look at it differently than a general collector, at least who doesn't have an unlimited budge per car.

But since there are probably a couple hundred 928 fanatics and probably just a couple dozen for sale over a year, maybe it won't depreciate much or at all.

But it sure looks like they're harder to move than lower priced cars, especially those with more than 70k miles.

anyway interesting comments, mostly.
