Default LUG NUT Q!

I bought some new wheels & tires for my '84. The wider back wheels are gonna hit my fenders! Then I find these spacers on the back hubs! What a relief!! I was told by the tire rack that these cars came with these spacers from the factory. I know the guy I bought the car from knew zero about cars, so he definately did not do this. The wheel studs are a mile long!! The stock lugs bottom out before tightening the wheel! Lucky me! My question is, I have seen these "Tall" lug nuts carried by Pelican Parts. Will these tall lug nuts be long enough for these studs? I bought some basic open ended steel ones for now. The tall ones are $8 a pop!!

Grazie!

Rob

I run the open end lug nuts, you could cut the studs or use shorter studs but then you can't put the 21mm spacer back on with the stock wheels if need be.

Actually you can put the stock wheels back on without the spaces and have no problems. They will sit a bit inwards and look like any other 928 that doesn't have spacers.

I would do what you did, use open end nuts and leave the studs as is.

I did not think about cutting them, that may be a good idea. The holes in the rim are pretty deep. If I paint the end of the stud & the steel lug nut black, as you show in your pic, it may not be very noticable. The wheels are the Cup1's.

I will have to play & see which direction I will go! Thanks!!

What about those tall nuts, will they fit??

Are the tall nuts 21mm deeper than the stock nuts? If they are then they should work

I do not know how much longer these lug nuts are. They look to be quite a bit longer in the picture on the website, possibly the 21mm you speak of. I submitted a question about this to their tech department. Hopefully they will know.

Are you clearing the calipers? Can you fit your spare on if you need to? (without the spacer?)

God only knows if my spare will do anything at all! I will keep a spacer in the car in case a flat should arise. As for the clearing part, it better! I bought these wheels/tires from the tire rack & they say they will fit my specific application.

I put a back wheel on after removing the spacer & the wheel seemed to seat fine, other than the too small lug nut!

The older cars have shorter lugs. The lugs press out of the hub easly enough.

Use open ended nuts and leave the studs as-is until you find the right spacers to clear the calipers and axle bits. open nuts can be found at any vw shop, for alot less than $8 per, and they will probably be sold in packs of 4...

I always thought that one of the bolts is supposed to have a red dot, helping you to position the inflation valve when mounting the wheel. Now why did you have all 5 painted red in picture shown...?

Theo

I now have 1 red painted stud on the SE, does this mean I have to put all 4 inflation valves on the right rear wheel? LOL

I never did figure out how Porsche decided which stud would be painted red.

Yeah, basically the red dot annotates where to put the big, retarded, and ineffective wheel locks, i have all five of the studs painted so i can put 5 locks on each wheel.

The secret is to buy 10 open ended lug nuts ( of the correct seat taper) and torque them down ..... then spin the standard black closed end nuts over top - works like a champ!! - and looks factory ...
