I've changed the battery which worked like a charm. I've found the code for the radio but am apparently unaware how to input it. The display shows CODE and four asterisks and the numbers along the bottom. I punched in the five digit code and nothing happened. Once I've input four of the digits, another set of four asterisks appear, the first disappering as I input the fifth digit, then it just sits. I'm not sure what else to do. I tried it three times and gave up.
The deck is the CDR-220. There is a pic of it earlier in this thread.

Check the code you have and see if it's for the SN of the radio you have installed. Radios get changed out sometimes. Use only four digits. Try the first four, if that doesn't work, try the last four in sequence.
I don't want to be a nooge, but we don't know if your battery drain is solved or not. I see you opted for a new battery and not charging then checking the one you have. There is a fairly complicated procedure to test your battery drain, that will need to be done by someone knowledgable about electricity. Maybe you could hook up with an auto electrics shop in town? Don't go to a stereo install shop, or your car will never run again.

The resting battery drain with all stock alarm and stereo should be around 5-10mA. I've seen as high as 400mA with aftermarket alarm and stereo stuff added. Let us know if you want to do the troubleshooting of the drain.
What's the story on your lighter power?

I have the same concern as Doc -- You have treated a symptom, not the problem -- unless by a very rare coincidence your battery decided to give up the ghost the day after you fiddled with the lighter socket. Best to assume there is still something that will drain your battery until you find out different. For now, leave the battery ground cable disconnected unless you are actually driving or actively troubleshooting.

I have used a Schumacher (sp) trickle charger for years, no problem. There is a load of stuff here about batt drains. Most just install a battery cut off switch or disconnect the ground strap b/c it can drive you nuts trouble shooting this system, esp if anything after market has been done. Good luck.

Where did you find that 5 digit code? It should be 4 digits and it may be hand written in your owners manual or somewhere in the usual assortment of documentation stored with the manual.

One thing to be aware of with German cigarette lighters. They are slightly larger than american lighters and therefore if someone has replaced the lighter insert with an american after market, and/or if the compressor you are using is American sized, you will have a problem making contact.
