Thx H and everyone else, I will verify tomorrow - I think the new tab part got skipped over by Rog. They sure looked new when I picked the radiator up. We can then know at least what is doable...

I know what the other folks are mentioning about tabs popping off after three bends so to speak.

cheers-

rich

My Devek radiator sprung a leak just after the warranty was up. I had read about Normy's experience, and asked about the end tanks when I bought it -- I was told by Susan that it was not glued but brazed. Upon casual inspection, it looked brazed, but in fact it had clear epoxy. Note that the epoxy is where the tubes meet the end tank -- the end tank itself is welded together. Had I been given the correct info about it's construction in the first place, I would have passed, just as I passed on their offer to sell me a replacement at a very small discount.

Hi Rich,
Yes I missunderstood the part about new tabs - did not know it was possible.

It is not a crappy part. The service is IMHO crappy if they shirk on replacement, and this thread is older than the Rocky Mountains, this has been going on for 7 years. Anyway ... the rad is a good one, I have used them with no issues. Why they break, why Behrs break, I do not know. And don't care. Anything that breaks in a year or 2 should be replaced free of charge.

When the length-of-warranty issue came up several years ago from Ed Ruiz and his Devek radiator failure, I think there was a lot of discussion about the duration that Devek should cover vs the duration that Ron Davis offered. Devek was reselling the radiators essentially, so warranty was a pass-back to the manufacturer. Exceed the manufacturer's warranty period and you are SOL as far as a full replacement. Devek offered a discount on replacement. That didn't sit well with Ed of course, and I'm sure that others felt that there should have been a longer implied warranty, something beyond the stated warranty that was part of the sale terms.

The aluminum radiators are specialty items at best. Typically supplied for hi-perf and racing applications, I suspect that squeezing any warranty beyond 'infant mortality' was tough to begin with. Consider that most buyers are not pro installers, most buyers don't maintain their cooling systems, etc, and you can see how a variety of causes beyond the control of the vendor can easily contribute to early failures.

From those who have purchased new Behr replacements, what is the warranty on the new part, and how does it compare with the Devek warranty? Just curious...

Standard Behr warranty is one year , two years if purchased from Porsche includes labor IF installed by the Porsche dealer.

Jim--

If I had a Behr radiator leak at 1.5x the warranty period, what are the chances of getting a new one as replacement? Hmmm, that good eh? I don't think I've ever heard of icicles forming on the hinges of the gates of hell...

This points to the issue with Devek on the Ron Davis radiator I think. We often feel that something "shouldn't" fail and we are probably right. I wonder why these folks don't offer an extended warranty program for more $$, similar to what is offered at Best Buy when I try to buy a $20 component. Add 15% of new retail and get an extra year warranty on those cables, sir!

The point I think is, if you buy a radiator from a respected 928 community supplier, you expect that the product will last "a long time" and will not fail "while it's still practically new".

Yes we've had the legalistic stuff here over and over. Bottom line is, a vendor should never put themselves in a position where they are foced to tell a customer "sorry bud, yes a rad SHOULD last longer but hey, warrantee is 1 year". Due diligence ALSO supposes that once it is brought to their attention that the product is prone to such COMMON failures, they DISCONTINUE it. At the very least, that is what I'd consider reasonable.

American Express use to advertise that by using their card you doubled the manufacture warranty. That would be a tremendous benefit.

Default I have an all AL Griffin

and it's going on 10 years old with no problems whatsoever.

http://griffinrad.com/

I don't know the model number. And it has the input and output located
differently from the stock Porsche radiator.

I just walked in to a local motor-head, high performance shop and saw this thing
sitting on the display floor. I pulled out a tape measure and...yep...it'll fit.

$200

So, someone might want to do some research - take some measurements and
contact them. You don't have much to lose.

I'm happy.

Is there anything "special" that you have to do upon installing an aluminum aftermarket radiator?

Gosh, am I glad I don't sell radiators. At the margins I have on most of my products, if a few of those would fail, I'd have to close my store...

The Behr radiator is a good product, I just bought a new GT version for my car, I wouls expect to get 20 years out of it, I do maintain my cars and one radiator I have that is still going touch wood is 23 years old. Plenty of fresh coolant in there though, I would have thought that the C&R radiator that is being sold should be pretty good too, you wouls hope to get at least 10 years from that one.

I have heard of one Behr that failed early, not maintained, lasted 4 years.

Cheers Greg
