I have my instrument cluster loose, actually it is a used cluster I bought to solve two problems. One is the speedometer DNW all the time and the other is a "D" lamp not lit. In testing I found the used panel lights for the timing belt and stop lamps did not illuminate. So my dilemma is should I:
1: Buckle it up and go home.
2. Swap just the speedo from the used cluster into my old cluster.
3: Punt.
Also, If I use the new used cluster I will need to replace some of the lamps. Is there a diagram from the back that shows which lamp is for which function?
There is a fairly easy way to determine what each bulb illuminates. Pull the bulbs out, one at a time, then whit the bulb and the cluster facing you, lift the it up to a ceiling light. Or you can flash a small flashlight or other light source into the empty socket and see what each of the socket are for.
If I had the thing off (used), I think I would just replace all bulbs or at least the drive bulb. I would also put a bulb or meter on each of the sockets (can you do that w/power to it?) and make sure power is getting to the bulb. I also have the intermittant, mostly not working, "Drive" light. Had the GTS for almost a year, saw it illuminated for first time last week. I think I may have adjusted the pod, but I assume I need to be opening it up as it quit working again.
IMo000 thanks. One peek is worth two finesses! Why did't I think of that!
Re; Drive lamp, it is in the speedometer cluster and not the same as the rest of the warning lights. I wonder if the problem with the "D" lamp is elsewhere. What are the odds that two cluster would have the same fault. More work to do. thanks, also.
The "D" light goes out in all 928's that have auto's.Its really the only bulb in the gear position indicator that gets any use. It's on almost the whole time the car runs.
I still have trouble with my instruments on the '86, even though I've replaced both the speedo, and the tach. For me, the problem is the 'circuit foil' on the back, which is worn from age, and loose connectors. Example, my gas gauge works if I reach way back and fumble with the left connector.
