Default TB covers painted silver- with pics

Hey all;

I just wanted to show a low cost easy thing to do to dress up the engine a bit. My covers were plain black and hard to keep clean. Last time I was in there, I cleaned up the covers (while waiting for new parts to come in) and painted them with a silver 'hammered' texture.

It took just two coats and I think it came out pretty good. It's also easier to keep clean and I can see if something is leaking easier than when it was black.

Here's the stuff I used:

Mike, they look good, but aren't they going to be even harder to keep clean?

Silver is supposed to be the color that stays the cleanest looking on the outside, while black is one of the hardest to keep looking clean. I suppose that rule should apply anywhere, right?

Hammered? Is that Rustoleum's version of a wrinkle / textured finish?

The hammered finishes are pretty cool. They aren't really textured, and in fact have a failrly smooth, sealed, easy-to-keep-clean surface.

I know a few folks who have talked about using the hammered black on rotor hats and such. I bought a gallon of the black to use on the sliding driveway gate and it looks way better than plain ol' black that was there previously. The color is black, but has some silver/grey stuff in it that gives it that varigated look without all the dirt-gathering habits that a true textured finish seems to have.

Many moons ago I painted all the engine tin in my 911 with 'wrinkle black'. About half a dozen thin spray coats, and leave the parts out in the sun. Came up a very nice fine textured finish. Show-car nice when it was clean, but a little dust or oil film spoiled the effect. Kinda forces you to do all the housekeeping in the engine bay.

It's actually very glossy in texture, so it wipes clean real easily. The 'hammered' looks like a texture and it is really thick, but it goes on pretty easily.

The flash from the camera kind of ruins the effect, it looks like a polished metal surface, like it was ball-peened into shape.

Haven't used that stuff on my 928 but I have used it plenty on motorcycle parts.
It is probably one of the best rattlecan paints around.
It covers really well and dries fast too.

I also tried the wrinkle coat stuff and have had only moderate success with that stuff. It is definately a paint that you have to undertstand to get it to look its best. You're screwed if there is even a hint of residual oil on the surface you are painting.

Cheers

Mike, that looks really nice. The hammertone works well in a lot of applications.

Thanks everyone. I'm really trying to dress things up under there. It's an uphill battle since I want to drive it all week and work on it when I can. Still not clean enough in general to post a pic of the whole engine bay. Hopefully by SITM!

I think I may have to go with an electric fan to make room and to show off a little more of the engine. Those brackets and fan really jam up the works alot.

I also lost at least 2 inches of clearance when I replaced the MMs .

I wish I looked that good when I was hammered.
