tranny troubles (too full?)
What would be the symptoms of having too much tranny fluid? I have been following the other tranny thread and my symptoms are similar, but when I check the level it is either right at or below max. It has a brand new filter and new fluid from last week.
My symptoms
No 4th gear in mormal driving
hard shifts/higher rpm between 2&3
Sometimes starts in 1st
None of this was happening before I just did the filter and fluid, except for an ocasional 1st gear start.
Thanks KK

I know mine has too much tranny fluid since it spat a little bit out on the freeway. Another Rennlist told me a while back that I had smoke coming out the back of my car. This was because the fluid was coming out of the cap and blown back onto the passenger exhaust pipe.
I haven't gotten the chance to drain it yet, but all of a sudden it has stopped on mine.

KK............did you have tranny issues before the oil/filter change or is this just since?
Andy, make sure you check the oil level per the WSM..............tranny warm, in neutral, engine running.............and tighten that cap well.

My tranny is fine. Shifts fine. It's a a hard from 2nd to 3rd when cold though, but smooth when warms up. Maybe I'll get down there and check it again real soon the next time after driving the car a little bit.

Thanks Scottsdude, I had no problems except for an ocasional start from first. I just finished the dreaded tourque converter bearing replacement job, thus the tranny was out and down and she asked me for a new filter, wyait.

Any chance the modulator got mal-adjusted while it was 'out & down'? Vac lines reconnected correctly? Kickdown cable/connections from kd switch hooked back right??
Also - you mention no 4th gear under normal driving - when DOES it go into 4th??

All I did (on purpose) was change the filter and fluid. Now (just ran it 6 miles) it isn't shifting when warm! ARRRGH..... I will double check the vacum lines if that could be it.
Latest symptoms
Shifts from 2-3 normal when "cold"
But doesn't shift into 4th at all!
Revs get higher before shifting as it warms up.
Doesn't want to upshift when warmed up until 3500 rpm
Thanks KK

Carefully check the adjustment on the cable from the throttle quadrant (where all the cables connect on the front of the engine) to the transmission. Adjust it so that there is no tension on the cable.
Make sure that the kickdown solenoid isn't activated.

My 84 S is kept at halfway between the Min and Max marks when cold. When Hot it is close to the top. I check it in neutral.. on level surface, (Automatic 4speed), and it shifts better than when I got it. Dexron 3 Great ride!

Fixed (maybe)
Ok, All of the symptoms are indicative of an overfilled tranny. It was easy for me to not believe there was enough in there as I swear at least 3.5 of the total 2.8 gallons came out during the service. (note to self, learn how to measure more things than beer and ...). So I did put more in than necessary and upon removal of about 12-14 oz the tranny shifts fine. When hot it is right at or slightly below the min mark. 2-3 has a slight bump, 3-4 is imperceptable except for the tach needle. Please tell my wife I am sorry for the probable destruction of the ear squeeze bulb thingee (works great to suck out tranny fluid without raising the car) as I have allready moved into the dog's quarters in anticipation of her reaction.
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!

I should also have that these checks were done with engine at Idle, and with Parking brake on for both cold and hot checks . When Engine is off and in Park, .. fluid is all the way up in tube.
