(One more time...)

Do any of you have trouble with the tools rattling around in the back while driving over bumps? i.e. do any of you keep the tools in a fabric bag?

Scott

Bill - on a GTS with the 17" spare - there is no space there... I can fit the lug wrench (in a soft fabric sleeve_ in the space behind the wrenches with the wrench end upward and at the outboard end - handle laying flat along the bottom - then the jack goes in front of this and the panel with all tools fits last. Tight but no fit issues.

My crank handle want to fall out and sometimes my tow hook too - a;ll the other tools are nicely secure. I added some velcro straps top to bottom across both to hold them in place - seems to work well.

Alan.

Alan, your idea of using velcro is welcomed my me. I keep using duct tape to hold the *$%&#$@*!! tow hook onto the panel, but it keeps falling off. I will place a small spot of velcro on the hook and on the panel under the hook so no one can see it.

The lugnut wrench has no place on the rear tool panel nor does the jack - although they can both fit behing the panel with some ingenuity.

The depressed area to the right of the pliers is for the wiper motor mechanism - there is no space there when the tool panel is in the car.

Is that the tool set from your GTS? Yellow screw driver handle??? That's so pre-1991...

I thought they all became red from that year on.

Apart from a couple that want to come slightly loose I have no problems. With the jack & lug wrench back there there is no room to really rattle about - why would you consider a fabric bag...? don't they fit in the slots at all? everything but the crank & tow hook are very secure for me.

Nicole - mine is yellow... the screwdriver was missing and the replacement I got was yellow - so far I haven't seen a red one - I may swap at some time - but its functionally the same...(with an extra blade too)

Ron - my velcro strap is in 2 parts & goes over most tools and is screwed in with tiny screws @ top & bottom. It actually goes under the crank since otherwise pressure on the center part pops it out of its slot. I have a loop of velcro around the center of the crank that fixes it to the ouside of the same strap.

I dremeled a small hole behind the tow hook and glued a small rare earth magnet in the hole. The hook has never fallen out since, and the tow hook completly hides the magnet.

Jim - nice! I may have to do that (is the tow hook steel then - looks like an alloy of some kind - heavy though!)

The crank is the one I understand falling out - it has a quite small contact area and any pressure on the handle part pushes it out of the slots - poor design really - needs a handle clip. The vecro really helps - quite obvious of course - but it is also easily removable and when off - you'd never know it had ever been there.

I have a couple thick foam blocks that sit behind the tool panel, and hold the tools in place nicely when the panel is installed. No tools fall out of the panel. I have the jack, in its fabric bag, stowed there between the two foam blocks behind the tool panel. Blocks are ~~2-3" wide, cut to fit the contour of the inside of the well there. I keep a stash of extra hi-power H-3 foglight bulbs there too, just in case. The foam was there when I bought the car with 22k on it. It wasn't apparent that the PO had ever even looked inside that tool cover/panel, so it's lileky a factory fit. No wire hook for the wheel lock covers though. Changed to the later locks so it's a moot point except for originality; I kept the original locks for posteriority.
