Default Sound deading started, HUGE difference.

I picked up some sound deadening material off of ebay ($16.99 for 10 sq ft) I ordered 20sq ft and they threw in 5 more sq ft for free. Iinstalled about 17 sq ft this evening. Took it for a test in around the hill I live on, the freeway, and local streets. I noticed an enormous difference right away. Will be ordering more, I'd say another 20 sq feet should get everything. (doors, trans tunnel, roof panel underneath headliner).

If anyone cares, here's what I've done so far.
Rear Hatch:
Battery box door
Iinside, bottom, and sides of spare tire storage area.
Area in front tool kit storage
All flat surfaces up to the edge of the rear seat backs.

Driver's seat:
Underneath carpet in front of the seat, going back about 5 inches under the seat.
Behind seat under the carpeting.

Passenger's seat:
Underneath carpet in front of the seat, going back about 5 inches under the seat.
Behind seat under the carpeting.
Covered cabin side of the wood panel that goes over the fuse box.

When I install my stereo, I will be able to do trans tunnel, doors, and rear quarters. My ANSA exhaust is very deep, looking forward to hearing more exhaust notes.

When I did mine, I heard the biggest difference with the doors, then the rear wheel arches. I used Dynamat Extream. What does your stuff weigh?

This is a cool project. I'd love to see some pics too.

I need to do something while I'm doing the 'rear seat delete' because it's still really loud from back there. I can hear my fuel pump all the time (still no radio). I like hearing the engine and exhaust, but I think I'd prefer a little more of a 'touring car' feel with less road and wind noise, especially if it doesn't add back the weight I lost when I removed the rear seat backs. Man are they heavy!

I noticed a huge difference in the doors with dynamat. I would like to do what you are doing in the rear area. Someday. Too many other projects for a while.

Dynamat is too expensive.

The big thing with a product like Dynamat is that many people believe you have to completely cover the surface area with the product to get it to work, actually, a single 1'x1' square in the middle of your door, will have just about the same affect as covering every square inch of your door. So, if you are on a budget but want to reduce the buzzing/roadnoise in your car, a little bit in the right places, goes a long way.

You have a link to the ebay product?

I just got done stuffing my wheel arches with 5 lbs of polyester fill..stuffed in side garbage bags 7 bucks at Walmart
Made a marked difference in my tire noise...the hig pitch whine with them is very much diminished.

I read about someone using the expanding spray foam in their real wheel arches. That sounds like
a real mess that could never be removed though. The polyester fill sounds like a good solution.

Being the cheap a** that I am I did my GTS rear arches with some stuff of eBay called "FatMat" and it did a good job of the sound deadening.
However once the 100F weather came it all melted and flowed onto the floor leaving a hollow piece of silver paper in place.
Be sure to check the temp capability if you live where the sun shines a lot.

Didn't someone here use the stuff that is used to repair mobile home roofs? That would probably be cost effective and heat stable.

They use actual fat in FatMat, beef fat to be exact. Sound deadening properties are lost in the summertime, but the inside of your car smells like a good ol'-fashion Texas BBQ.

The Lowes product is called Peel n Seal. It's an asphalt based roofing product which is similar to a number of the sound deadening products out there such as Fatmat and the original Dynamat. I've read that these products may not hold up well when mounted on non-horizontal surfaces and exposed to high temperatures. I've also seen conflicting information on whether these products give off an odor. Dynamat extreme and Raamat are not asphalt based and are supposed to be both more effective and more robust.

Once the weather warms up around here, I'm planning on laying the Lowe's product on the floor boards and hatch floor, and then using the Dynamat Extreme (already purchased) on the doors, wheel wells, center tunnel, and roof. If I hadn't already purchased the Dynamat Extreme, I would probably use the Raamat because it's cheaper.
