Looking it over, I'll patch it for now. The crack is a bullseye with no arms, so, who knows, maybe it won't spread. Every other one I have had lasted about 6 months before a crack spread out from it requiring replacement. I try to stay away from gravel trucks, but I didn't this morning.

I was driving on the freeway in my '87, at least 1/4 mile behind anything. Wham ... a big rock hit just to the right below the mirror - major crater about the size of a quarter - no fixing that. I can't imagine where that rock came from given the distance from other cars - that shows how fast and far rocks can travel when shot out of a tire. Then, a week later, another rock hits just in front of me. Now I'm hoping to collect as many hits as possible before the replacement.
I'm getting a no-cost Porsche sourced windshield thanks to my insurance.

Insurance sometimes gets insanely cheap prices on auto glass. We had a friend that worked in a busy auto glass shop offer to replace a side window on a volvo station wagon at his cost with free labor, and the insurance had it done for 30% of that including labor and it at least looked like factory glass. My only gripe was that he claimed cleaning out the old glass wasn't part of the job, so I had to vacuum it out.
I pay the comp because accidents and claims can be messy time sinks, and if I want to with AAA they handle it all.
Will you be getting glass with the antenna in it?
Don't know if its still that way, but fixit goop was very sensitive to moisture in the crack and debris, today would have been a good day to do it, asap regardless.

"HappyTruck" the infamous '66 Ford F100 that I owned a few years ago had a cracked windshield. I was at a place that tinted windows- they assured me that this rare wrap glass was not just available....it was in stock! The local glass people keep a good stock [in central Florida] of nearly any car. Yeah, if you blow the window out of your '76 Lancia Fulvia you are not going to get it repaired instantly, but most cars are next day affairs for rhe windshield, courtesy of Fedex.

Dangler, my antenna is on my roof (that started in 89). Glass is readily available, although antenna in glass is spotty. I'm keeping the car out of the weather until it gets patched.

Hi Bill,
Sorry to hear.. I have had to have my front glass replaced about 4-5 times, and once 2 x in a 3 month spread. however, i do have full insurance, and "glass" coverage... My company has paid every time... I got a few pilkingtons, and a few sekurits... Yes, I also have the antenna in window, as my shark is an 87, and they are harder to get.. The glass shop bills the ins co $1200+ to do the job.. I think they get the glass for about $600.. I agree you have to watch the glass from China... I do.. I've also had the glass on the range rover break twice in 1 year... Go figure..
Good luck,

That sucks....I need to replace mine too....I got a quote from the dealer for about $1200 (attenna windshield).....one day I'll get around to filling an insurance claim to fix it......
Hmm a norcal group buy for windshields......I would be very interested in that!!

I found good results when I simply followed the truck back to where it 'lives' here in Idaho.
They even had a form I could fill out - no hassles at all.... of course it wasn't a 928 windshield, but a toyota pickup.

I might be up for a group buy of windshields in NorCal. I replaced mine (w/antenna in the glass) about 2 years ago and the shop did a rotten job and the glass is already pitted so badly that I avoid driving into the sun. Anyway, keep me in mind if a group buy will get a discount. My glass was around $1000, but paid my my insurance. Mark Thomas advised against the brand I got because it was too soft. It is. I will try another brand next time.

I got a quote for a Sekuriflex windshield with green tinted band on top (factory windshield) at a touch over $1k from Niello Porsche in Rocklin...+ $150 for installation or just under $1200 for factory glass with antenna! I've got quotes as low as $450 for the chinese junk glass installed.....unless a smoking deal for good glass comes along I am just gonna have Niello do it and file an insurance claim...
