Default Factory vs. Aftermarket hatch struts???

It appears to be time to replace my factory hatch and hood struts. They will probably work better in the warmer weather but I believe these are original to the car and it is time. I have every record which seems to go month to month and no mention of them ever being replaced.

I find it hard to believe but if these lasted 13 years that is great.

So my question is, do the after market units last this long? My experiences with the 911 parts is they last 3-5 years and die no matter if you use them or not.

It is a negligible amount of $$ with the after markets at a little over $10ea. and the factory double that.

Any opinions or input on the after market struts?

Aftermarkets do not seem to last more than few years.

My aftermarket ones last 2 years tops, some have given up after 6 months.

Sounds like I am going to pay the extra and buy the factory units. The 928 is not as much of a PITA to change as are the 911 but It is worth doing it once and have them good for at least 5 years.

Got mine at Zims with a lifetime warranty. They replaced them for free after two years.

Hmmm... the OEM ones just work and are not expensive. No need to replace them every 2 years, "free" or not. My 89 has only had them replaced once since birth, about 5 years ago.

I would say this shouldn't even be a coversation. $10 a piece is a cup coffee in Los Angeles. $20.00 total for the rear hatch for 2 years of service (at the very least)?....takes all of 3 minutes to change out... what was the question?

Has anyone paid the extra bucks for the Porsche-branded struts? And do they last longer than the non-branded struts?

wasn't that the original question. How about answering it? Do some work better and longer than others and which ones are they?

If I knew the answer or had an opinion do you think I would have asked the question?

DEVEK sold me "STABILUS LIFT-O-MAT" 5 years ago. I think they were about $30 a pair. I wasn't paying attention if these were the same as the originals. At least they are made in the Fatherland.

The PO replaced the hood shocks 7 yrs ago and they're now shot; especially when the weather is cold.

For the realtive small diff in $$$ I'm going with the Porsche variety (or whoever makes them for Porsche).

Pep boy shocks on my Mustang hatch are more than 7 years old and work just fine.

I don't think Porsche shocks like to sit, all mine were bad and I replaced them with the ones from 928Intl, just make sure you mount them properly to keep the seal lubricated or something like that.

Well, to continue to feed this hot topic...

DR sells GENUINE Porsche rear struts at $37+ each (it doesn't say struts or pair), no OEM listed, but the only front struts he sells are Attwood aftermaket for $11 each.

Yeah. I had that very conversation - except on the topic of hood struts - with Jeannie yesterday. She does not know if the GENUINE article lasts longer than the aftermarket. Apparently, no one who has ordered the Porsche struts has reported back to her.

I may spring for the extra bucks for Porsche struts in a few weeks. Thing is - it'll be at least two years before I know if they were worth it.

EDIT: I misread your post Bill. Funny though. Jeannie told me that she could get GENUINE Porsche hood struts if I really wanted them.
