Default Intake R&R/Powdercoat Question

As I said in my other post last week, about ten days ago I noticed a very strong fuel smell coming from the engine bay, at the top front of drivers side intakes. So this past Monday night I said wtf & decided to start the process to located the source of my fuel smell & also that occasional small vacuum leak too. By Tues. night, I had everything off. The plan is to have it all put back together again over the next couple of weeks, in time for the Sebring Shark Shiver Feb. 9th-11th. Of course, besides resolving the two issues that started me down this road, I also hope that I do not create any new ones!

The only odd thing was when I went to take a close up pic of the vacuum connectors in the V area. When I lifted the light brown colored fuel injector wiring harness above the fittings, gas came out of the opening on the drivers side where the two grey electric lines come out! That really threw me. It was a fair amount of fuel, maybe a fourth of a shot glass!(think that was the best description cause it made me want a drink!)

I doubted fuel would be running from the injectors on the drivers side all that way back along the wiring harness. The more obvious thought was the other rear gas line from the regulator on the drivers side, which is right above this junction in the wrapped wiring circuit. Even though this line looked ok & I could not produce any leaks by moving it around, I cannot imagine what else it could be. I was told I could use any standard fuel line to replace this one, so I'll go to NAPA this weekend. Of course, this would still be a bit odd since the gas smell that started all this was at the front of the plenum, above injectors 5-6 area. Nothing else obvious appeared thus far as the culprit for the fuel leak. Dare I say, "no smoking gun". That would have helped a novice like me of course!

I also plan on replacing the seals on my injectors, intake & MAF O-rings; intake manifold gaskets, all vacuum connectors & the two rear gas lines. Also the heater control valve & hose while I'm in there too. At least the things that are accessable only with the intakes & MAF out of the way. I was told the actual hard plastic vacuum lines rarely leak & mine look pretty good so not planning on the lines themselves. Thought about changing them to have a set of the colored ones for the look, then talked myself out of it. I know the non available rear "U" shaped gas line will be about $70 after calling around to find someone to make me a new one.

I wanted to ask if anyone has any other suggestions in case there is anything else? Mainly, I decided to post this to ask about powdercoating my intakes. What is an expected typical costs? I've read lots of previous posts. Does 928 Motorsports still do this? I can live with how mine look now, powdercoating would be a nice luxury though if it was good quality at an affordable price for me. Thanks in advance & keep yer fingers crossed for me!

Could you reconnect all the fuel lines, remove the fuel pump relay, jumper the pump and look for a leak as the system builds pressure?

22 yrs old car could have one or more failures: lines, regulator, damper, injector et al.

I'd think you need to "reseal" your injectors: reseal kits can readily be found for those standard "bosch" injectors, but if it's spraying over or upwards, you miight look for a crack in the injector on that side of your car. I'd clean all of them & just look around them all. CHeck your fuel rails for cracks by the injector "hats" (where the injectors clip to the rail).

Also, check the tightness of the fitting going to your regulator & damper at the rear of the engine: if a connector is loose, it would spray & could accumulate that way in the harness as well.

I have red/black/blue ignition wires & vacuum lines available if you decide to go colorful: I like this approach in moderation as it's easier to find issues during future diagnosing.

Mark.

Hi Mel:

You say you could not "produce any leaks". Did you reattach the fuel lines and pressurize the system (jump the fuel pump relay)? I understand you will have to reinstall the injectors and rails, but you need to do this to find the leak. With the strong smell of fuel, you know there's a leak in the area.

I recently had an injector that had a separation in the injector body that created a nice external injector leak.

yeah, sorry about the duplicate thread, I'll delete this one. Thanks for the info Bill... Im afraid it might be something like a cracked injector.

Sorry about the duplicate thread, I tried to delete the other one, perhaps Randy can help me there. I know I need to pressurize the system to check for leaks. Thanks!

If you can get yourself a pressure guage so you can fully check the system including the pump and timing of pressure drop. Should reveal all..........Good luck.
