Hi Mike,

The only change that has been made so far is that I've switched to a better print process. The information is still the same .

John,
Do you have any of these left?

I will be interested in the S4 specific info even though it sounds like it may not be completely necessary. I'm new to the 928 so I welcome and encourage every bit of hand-holding and bottle feeding I can find.

This is way better than hand-holding! John's guide is great.

I did my first ever timing belt job a few weeks ago using John's manual (the most wrenching I'd done before was cleaning the throttle body on my Audi and bleeding brakes).

The manual is very good - there are only minor differences to an S4, like the lack of a viscous fan clutch, and a different mounting mechanism for the tensioner arm, but the manual is very helpful and accurate for 96% of the job.

It also has a step-by-step for buttoning up the car again afterwards.

I definitely recommend it - a very well spent few dollars.

Hopefully he has more of them

This is a great guide, I got a free copy with my belly pan.

Thanks again for that John, I used this guide exclusively when i was doing the timing on the new engine.

John's manual makes the tb/wp job so simple, a cave-man could do it.

I used Kelly's book for an S4 belt/WP install and it went perfect. It's the best step by step instruction available. I especially like the detailed torque specs, firing order chart, and all the little stuff that I've never seen in the other instruction sets....all in one compact and easy to follow booklet. Just try not to get grease all over it like I did.

Thank you Everyone for the compliments and feedback.

I do have more manuals available. They are currently $16.00 + $2.30 for U.S. first class mail. Pm me for details or for international mailing rates.

Thanks Chris! That was my intention exactly.

I've tried to narrow down the differences between the 85-86S and the 87S4+. The differences I have so far are:

*The pre-S4's have a single belt driven fan (viscous fan) and the fan shroud comes out separately. The S4+ has two electric fans that need to be removed and they come out with the fan shroud assembly as a single unit. I believe that is the biggest difference.

*On the pre-S4’s, the Air Pump Belt is longer and is used to drive the belt driven fan. On the S4+ is it shorter, but the same procedure is used on both cars to loosen and tighten the belt.

*On the pre-S4's, the engine wiring harness runs behind the timing belt covers. On the S4+, there is a bracket in front of the timing belt covers that holds the wiring harness and a few spark plug wires. This bracket is mounted in the same location where the belt driven fan mounts on the pre-S4's and needs to be removed.

*The pre-S4's have an Idler Roller that is pressed onto a boss which is cast into the water pump. The boss acts as an axle for the roller. On the S4+, the axle screws into the water pump and there is no cast boss. The torque value for the axle (shaft bolt) should be for a 10mm bolt (40+5 Nm or 30+4 ft/lbs.), whereas it is an 8mm for the pre-S4's.

*On the pre-S4's, there is a Lower Idler Roller Assembly, which has a single roller. At some point after the 86’ model year, the Lower Idler Roller Assembly received two rollers, but I’m not sure which year it began.

*The pre-S4 Belly Pan is a single piece and has 7 bolts to remove. On the S4+ there are two protective plates (belly pans) with (?) bolts.

I just got my manual from John and read it cover to cover. Great detail and coverage. I am not due for a TB yet but being prepared is key as I am learning about these cars! Great to have folks like you stepping up for this community and producing something like this...thank YOU.

Hi John,

Do you still have a copy you're willing to sell me?

Thanks

Aryan, worth getting if he still has them.
Even with an S4, John's manual is a great thing to have.
Combine it with Pirtles's writeup and you won't miss a thing.

Ditto what Aryan said - any chance we could get our hands on a few?
