Default Starter motor...genuine Porsche or not?

The price difference is almost double for a rebuilt Porsche versus a rebuilt Bosch unit.
Does anyone think there is a good reason to buy the more expensive unit?

I have a Bosch on my '79, and apparently you cannot get a cowl for it. I think that functionally the units are the same, but without the cowl the Bosch unit is subjust to overheating and a short life.

I bought a rebuilt one without having to turn in a core for next to nothing. Try Ebay, Eagle electric i think, they are in Van Nuys CA. Works great, the only reason I changed mine wasnt because of it not starting the car, rather it made an annoying noise occasionally. Once i did change it i noticed the starter in general is allot quieter now and the once annoying noise is now history.

Yep - that'd be the Mack-Daddy starter setup....
BUT - He needs a starter for an '88 and Carl's site says his is good thru '86...

Eagle seems like a good place, but somebody must make a high torque starter with an adapter plate for the 928 in all the years, just keep looking.

Doh! Don't know what I was thinking! This is about my alternator, not starter motor.

Excuse my carelessness...

I bought a couple of those Denso mini-starters off eBay (rebuilt units). I put one in the '86 a couple weeks ago, and it works well. Very quiet when starting.

Tom M. has the same starter on his 89 GT, IIRC.

Don't buy the Porsche starter, there are lots of alternatives. Find a reputable rebuilder near you, or go to one of the Big[x].

I wasn't quoting Porsche prices. The prices are from one of the big 3...4...howevermany

They listed their two choices as either Porsche rebuilt or Bosche rebuilt...

The Denso mini-starter sounds good but looking on ebay I'm not finding one that specifies that it fits the 928. Does anyone know which one fits?

That's why I'm starting to use Big[x]. Yeah, that's about as reputable as it gets around here.... Go for the rebuilt.

The mini starters are so much easier to handle at ~8lbs!

Here's the (eBay store) I bought from. For the listings I've seen, the price has varied from $125-$199 - he's testing the 928 waters. The same starter fits the 911, but spins the opposite way, using a different clutch and/or trans.

The only issues I had with the starter was that it didn't come with an connector for the flat bladed start terminal, and the battery terminal is only a few MMs from the pan.

The one Carl sells looks like a superior starter, with new components.

I just bought one of those mini starters from High Performance on eBay and put it in my 89S4 today.

It sarted the car but makes a terrible noise while the car is running. It seems like the starter is not disengaging from the flywheel? The ad says the starter works from 78-95 MY's but I noticed some of these starters, like the one Carl is selling say <86 MY.

I'm going to have to send mine back. Maybe there is another model?

Any ideas? Has anyone tried one of these on an S4?
