Default Super charger had to come off... Update: Now it's going back together

No, I am not going back to NA! Also, let me be frank that I don't think this is a flaw with DR's kit. I think it's actually a flaw with the 928 block as so many stock engines have the same failure. Now with that out of the way, here's the issue...

Don't get me wrong... The supercharger is not the blame for this. Well, at least not directly. I think pressurizing the crankcase is probably the culprit.

As many of you know I thought I had a RMS leak that caused my clutch to go bye-bye. Well that wasn't it. It was suggested that perhaps I had oil leaking down from the V and contaminating the clutch. The only problem was that I couldn't see into the V.

Well after replacing the RMS, and the oil pan gasket, I knew I still had an oil leak somewhere as I was losing about a qt. per 200 miles! I was pretty sure it wasn't going out the tail pipe. And the ait outlet for my provent was clean. That left the V.

I kinda knew it was coming from from the oil filler plate, but really didn't want to believe it because it meant pulling off the SCer. The oil filler plate had to be the culprit - actually the gasket.

Sure enough, last night I pulled the SCer off and there you see it.

DR used a steel plate just like this one in his car and he has not had any issues. I suspect that's why he used the same design on my car. I think the different expansion rates between the two metals probably caused the gasket to fail. In any event, to DR's credit, he's designed an all aluminum version which I believe is now standard fare on his kit, and sent one to me at no additional cost to me along with injector seals, and intake gaskets. Thanks DR!

Working about 2 hours each night (including a lot of scratching my head) it's taken me 2 nights to pull it off. Not bad at all.

There's another side benefit to having the SC off. When we did the original install, the connector for the crank sensor crumbled during the tear down. We couldn't replace it as DR was out of stock. It gave us some troubles because without the connector housing, it is no longer keyed to the other connector and sure enough it got put on backwards. Joe for NY {Flott Loeben) was able to reach up from below and got it turned around. It is currently held together with duct tape.

So over the next couple of nights, I'll be getting the gasket material off, and generally cleaning things up. I'll replace the oil filler plate with the new one and hopefully will not have any issues further issues with it. SCer will hopefully be back on this time next week.

Once I get the SCer back on, I'll probably pull the cam covers and get those powdercoated to finally make the engine bay "look" clean. Then fun never stops!

Andrew,
Thanks for sharing. My Eaton is off to install the IC. I didn't see any oil leakage in the valley.

The more you have to take these things apart the easier it will seem

Good work Andrew.

I say we start a poll to guess the number of left over bolts.

Difference in expansion has no bearing on the leakage. Don't waste your time pondering that.

You wouldn't of had that problem with a turbo...

How many miles do you have now with the SC, just like 2,000-3,000?

I'm guessing about 4k-4.5k.

Andy used a steel plate there as well. Mine has not leaked. It was gasketed with Right Stuff. The main problem I have with Andy's filler is the tiny fill/breather tube and orifice. I'm redesigning it to open that up considerably and put a simple plate baffle below the orifice to reduce oil ejection into the breather at sustain high RPM (you may not have had that problem unless you stay in the throttle for several minutes above 6000RPM). With Andy's design I've had to literally drip oil in, taking at least 5 minutes per quart when doing an oil change or it would overflow the fill tube. I worked around that problem, but the orifice is just too small for adequate ventilation of crankase perssure as well.

Hmmm.. maybe the thickness of the plate is the issue? Who knows... who cares. I've got a new one made os aluminum that looks like it'll work perfectly. DR's been making little tiny improvements to this setup. I can't wait for it to be all back together so I can drive it!
