Some of you may have noticed me grousing around about more power etc for my 83 5 spd. Car sat for about a year before a relative of the PO replaced the battery in June, and drove it very little between then and end of November when I bought it. I drove it maybe 30 miles down to the reserve light, put in a bottle of Techron and 10 gals of Chevron gas, and dropped it at the first shop. I wanted several items fixed, had no space to park it, so I let two shops take their time on my fix list, and basically picked it up for real driving 12/29.

Monday I drove it maybe 35 miles, cruising through the foothills with my son, and noticed poor acceleration a couple time, with maybe a ping or miss or something annoying at 3500+ rpm. Today I drove it around town, then took it out on the freeway and made a big loop of maybe 50 miles, with a couple WOT clear it out bits, ran it down to almost reserve, put in $5 of Arco premium 91 octane, and drove a couple miles to Greg's shop.

Ollie put it on the lift and adjusted the shroud down so the fan didn't hit, and Greg gave me a can of Lubro Moly Ventil Sauber to put in with the next tank of gas. Since I was down to almost reserve I just put the can behind the drivers seat to use later.

Car is running great now. Makes no sense to me, it is MUCH quieter at all speeds, and much smoother, I hear a whole new set of sounds now with the windows down. Can't imagine how wonderful it might be once I actually put the Lubro in the tank. My only guess is that the fan hitting the shroud was causing much more of a problem than I suspected, and/or that first 10 gallons of gas wasn't enough for the bottle of Techron and running the gas down close to reserve then just adding 2 gallons of Arco may have diluted the Techron enough to make a difference? Weird.

I've used this stuff before with great results. Thanks for reminding me, Dan!

However, I've been advised that if you run this stuff more than once, you should have your oil changed soon thereafter. Apparently lthis stuff and oil are not the best of combinations. Don't know why, but have been told that.

I've got an '80 5 speed that sat for years too... I've only put on maybe 3,000 miles in 7 months, but the more I drive it, the better it runs!

I really think that these things hate to sit... I'm planning on using it more an more in 2007.

Yes my 928 doesn't consume gasoline anymore, I just carry a small can of gas behind the driver's seat. A little -known factoid is that Porsche Skunkworks created the seatback flux capacitor which you have inadvertently discovered. Which is why 928 seats are the heaviest seats known to man.

The old "italian tune-up" (isn't that the name you give it in english?) works much better than magic add-ons to the fuel and, specially, the oil.

Yep, the Italian Tune-up always worked good for me. Of course washing the car makes it go faster also.

Changing the oil always made me think it was running faster.

OTOH the rev limiter does need periodic WOT testing.

I heard valve cleaner (and I use Lubro Moly Ventil Sauber too) clogs your injectors.

I didn't notice any significant difference after using the Lubro Moly although the car had already seen many italian tunes prior to this which really cleared it up.

I think the most important experience to take away is that these cars love to be driven and truly do run better when driven regularly.

Oh and I'm not going to define "driven"

They have it down here off of the 52 at that euro parts store. They have all the lubro stuff.

I found it online from a California distributor. Bought a case, used 5 cans now, but it hasn't made a bit of difference to my pinging problem.

Did you put it behind the seat or in the tank?

Pinging would drive me nuts, and its not a long drive.

If it hasn't helped you have some other issue causing a lean condition. This could be due to a clogged fuel filter, or more likely, a failing in-tank fuel pump.

The Lubri Moly stuff did help greatly to eliminate the pinging on my GTS.
