Is there any rubbing of the back side of the belt? If not, its fine. Just try to center the new belt on both cam gears and it should track pretty straight after that.

Default Look at pass side

The pass side sits all the way back on the cam!

The pass side looks way uncentered to me.

What does your tensioner look like? Is the rubber boot cracked? Is the tensioner dry?

Default Parts in box

I am ready to replace and rebuild the total set-up all the parts are in the box and waiting to be installed. I was concerned why the belt had shifted and wanted to make sure this did not happen after the rebuild. I'm waiting on the crank lock this week.

When you take off the old belt and remove the tensioner and tensioner arm, inspect them pretty closely. Also inspect the bolt that goes through the center of the small roller on the tensioner arm to make sure it is straight. If it is not, order another one. Also, make sure you get the bushings that fit inside the tensioner arm. This is mostly what will control whether your belt stays tensioned. The other thing that could do this is the water pump pulley, so look at that and make sure it is turning freely and straight.

I wouldn't worry as much about the old belt as the new belt, though. The pump and rollers you were probably going to replace during the job. So, once you get the new belt on and remove the flywheel lock, turn the engine as many times as your arm will allow and watch where the belt tracks. If the same thing happens again, then you need to really study the tensioner arm and see if it can run true or if it needs to be replaced.

The belt is back on that side, but I see a wear shadow showing that it has ridden more forward. See where it is after you replace the rollers and bushings and rotate it a bit. It will probably be OK.

Also, what year car is this? On S4 and newer, it will always ride a bit further back on the passenger side due to the Hall sensor trigger plate behind the gear on that side.

The fact that it's running aft of where the wear marks are tells me that something has changed since the original wear marks were made. In general, if something is misaligned in the belt path, whatever part is *after* the misaligned part will show the symptoms. If it were the DS that was not running in the correct place, the water pump would be suspect IMHO. As Matt said, check the tensioner closely.

I got this advice once from PorKen
"The belt closely follows the angle of the tensioner pulley. If the belt side of the pulley faces to the block, the belt tracks inside; away from the block, outside. If the pulley is perpendicular to the block, the belt will track in the middle of the crank gear."

good luck

So...you're saying that belt tracking can be manipulated? What's the procedure for this?

Thanks,

Harvey

Default My car is an 86

I have all new parts, rollers, Wp new, rebuild Tensioner kit ect ect. I assume that the angle is off because of the Tensioner is not correct.
