Default Replacement of 928S4 -89 10 speaker system

I've searched like crazy for speaker replacement guides here and everywhere else on the Internet. I've found some guides and specs, but what i really would want is for someone to tell me exactly what speakers that would fit in my -89 S4 (brand/model) with the 10 speaker system. I really don't want to make anymore changes than to exchange the speakers and keep the grilles. Porsches own exchange speakers are ridiculously expensive so I was thinking about going with something else.

Anyone!?

I've had good luck with the Crutchfield on-line speaker guide.

www.crutchfield.com

Just go to the upper left hand side and pick "Car Audio & Video" on the pull down. The first choice is "Find what fits my car". Hope this helps.

What radio and amp do you have? If it's all stock then you should be aware that the stock speakers are all 2 ohm and almost all aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but, the increased resistance will reduce the effective power of the stock amplifer and the end result will sound like crap.

Lots of speakers will fit the holes. The biggest issue is the rear woofers. The stock ones produce reasonable bass with the stock amp, at least when new. I haven't found a drop-in replacement that will come close. The cavity behind the speaker is large and open, so the speaker must be designed to operate in free-air. Everybody ends up with a subwoofer stuck somewhere.

Because of deterioration I replaced all mine with an MB Quart series speakers and cross-overs. I'm also using a couple Soundstream Rubicon amps and a Blaupunkt Heidelberg head end. I'll be replacing the Heidelberg because of it's lack of sound quality.

Back to speakers, if you plan to drive the speakers with the same amp, make sure the new speakers are of the same ohm rating. 2 or 4 I can't remember what the stock speakers are right now. Anyway, when you remove the rear 6" speakers, you'll have to gut them so you can use the plastic surround as a contoured spacer for the new ones. That part is unique to the 928.

Still tweaking mine. And, possibly yes to Bill's comment about the sub, I have a 10" MB Quart subwoofer waiting the wings for an install. I'll get a better head-end installed first to see if I really need it.

A work in progress.

If you have any questions or want photos of the installed speakers, let me know.

Cheers,

I replaced both rear woofers with Boston Acoustics Pro woofers..model number pro6.5W...two years ago...along with two sets of component speakers from Boston Acoustics. The component speakers fill the four tweeter spaces and the four 4" mids/full range speakers. The models were called Boston RC420 4" component speakers with an SKU number of 69028318705. The rear woofers and all of the 4" speakers use the grilles provided. All of the tweeters still have the original grilles. Hope this helps. As stated above in other posts...there is a **** load of info here regarding stereo equipment...just do an advanced search

Brett:

Are you happy with the Boston Acoustics Pro woofers? I've tried so many 6.5's, I can't name them all, but they all sounded anemic in those holes since they are designed for a sealed box or small port.

I'm poking around but haven't located info on a BA Pro6.5w yet, not even among BA legacy products. Might they be the Pro 6.5LF ? Even that seems hard to find anywhere in the US.

Right now I have a JVC KD-G521 head-unit which is connected to the factory amp beside the passenger seat. I bought this head unit because it was quite cheap and I also mounted a iPod connection kit in the armrest. Now I have realized that the iPod user interface on the JVC is so sluggish that it is barely usable

Now I'm thinking about buying a Becker Indianapolis Pro 7952, which also has nav and look ever so clean. This one has:
  • Music output 4 x 30 watts RMS output 4 x 18 watts
  • Pre-out 4 channels plus subwoofer/centre speaker (adjustable)

Is that enough to bypass the factory amp? Or do I have to fit a new amp in the compartment beside the passenger seat.

Is there someone who has been able to rewire the cables to the backseat speakers without taking the whole car apart, or is that just part of the fun?

I like most of my sound from the front, with just some fill from the rear.

Subwoofer is what I would start with, work out the bass, not worry too much about whatever else goes in the rear to "fill in" the sound, then look at the best sound matched to the sub with the front speakers. MB Quart seems to be the main choice for later years than my 83, one point I would note is that Quart has like 5 grades of speakers. For my 83 I am thinking about a pair of nice sealed box two ways on the package shelf since the doors are so shallow.

It's just a matter of pulling away the rubber edge molding on the inner door opening, running the wire in there, then under the carpet tucked under the sill plate inner lip, to the front. It can all be hidden rather easily.

Funny thing is I bought a bunch of different MB Quarts and I found the lower range ones to have the punchiest, tightest mid-bass in the rear.

The doors are shallow (2"). The ideal location for mid-bass in the doors in the lower front area. I think Sterling Gee was molding some pods for that area.

The model number is from a receipt I have from the car audio shop that installed the woofers. Model # is in front of me...Boston Pro woofers Pro6.5W ..Installed at Richies Auto Radio, North Dartmouth, MA...Phone is 508 997-2626. They do alot of custom installs and are very reputable...Been at the same location for at least 20 years. The 6.5 woofers are a little weak..Not enough lows for my liking....At the same time I added a small enclosure in the hatch with a square Kicker Solarbaric woofer to fill in the lows....All ten speakers and the sub are powered by a JL audio 6 channel 6450 amp....

I think your amperage is marginal. The 928 has a lot of noise from the tires and thru the doors and IMHO 30 amps just isn't enough. Currently I'm running 50 amps per channel driving just the mids and tweeters with 300 from a seperate amp driving a 10" sub in a custom enclosure behind the passenger seat. I'm just finishing up the cosmetic issues with this install, but the sound improvement is fantastic. Currently I'm very happy.
