Default Heated seats not working

Is ther usually one thing that stops my heated seats from working? Not a big deal if they don't but my wife would really like it.

Cliff - check fuse #8 on the fuse panel. If that's OK, then there is a relay under each seat that might be bad...

I think more often than not, there is discontinuity in the heater elements themselves--a broken wire somewhere in the loop.

Yep, disconnet the wire under the seat and messure resistance - if none - element is broken

Any idea which wires? Have any pictures? I have 8 way power seats with heating elements that I would like the test to see if the heating part works.

I've got heated seats with the rheostat built in the switch and mine don't work either. Anyone had any luck trouble shooting this? Better yet, anyone have the PC board from a functioning unit that I could borrow to trouble shoot my own?

Unplug the heating elements themselves--they're the two-prong jobbies that (I think) have what looks like a mercedes symbol on the plug. The plugs are generally secured to a plastic plate that hooks onto the seat bottom springs. The wires can be traced and run into the seat cushion/seat back. You can check for continuity using a multi tester.

Adam, I have the same setup. Have you tried holding the switch in the "on" position? I have to do this with the driver's seat (passenger works fine) as the switch does not "latch" in the on position. Mine works when I hold it on. I have yet to investigate if this is a switch or relay in the controller problem. have a feeling it will be the more expensive of the two .

Hey Bill,

Thurston Pritchard, one of the local auto electric guru's had one of my seats in his lab for awhile. I bought a replacement switch to see if that would help with the trouble shooting, but it didn't make a difference, it's somewhere in the PC board from what little I understand. He said that if he had a functioning unit to probe he could figure out what the problem is with mine. Apparently its a common problem with the adjustable units. He did say he could convert it to the earlier on/off style without a problem (the elements work fine), but I'd really like to have the adjustability. Right now, mine don't work at all. I think he did get them to heat up by holding the switch in like what you mentioned, and putting in a new switch didn't help.

Adam, If Thurston finds the problem, could you post the result or contact me? I have a feeling it is a solid-state relay in the controller unit that is not latching electronically. Would be nice to know if my suspicions are correct.

For sure Bill,

Consider this a shout out to anyone who has the PC board from a working late model heated seat to contact me and we can solve the mystery for everyone.
