I know there are alot of 928's out there with more horsepower than stock, some of which are beyond what the transmission can handle, and some who don't take their car further because of the limitations of the tranny.

Just out of curiosity, would you buy a 6 speed conversion for your 928 if it was available from a reliable resource?

The 928 shift pattern is unique. It is one more reason the 928 is so special. I will stick with 5 gears.

5 is more than enough for me. I hardly ever get to wind it up in 3rd, let alone 4th and 5th.

I said yes, but there are lots of “what ifs” involved.

I could see making the swap if my 5-speed had a problem and the 6-speed was a bargain compared to a rebuild or replacement. Another consideration would be how serviceable the six was and if it was more of a nightmare to find parts for it than the origenal down the road.

In the MGB world a lot of guys want to replace their 4-speeds for a 4sp with an overdrive. Nice – but they’re hard to find and usually expensive. So a lot of guys turn to the aftermarket for 5-speed conversion kits. Opting for either a 240/260/280Z 5-speeds or a 5-speed out of a European car called a Sierra in the UK. Both use adaptor kits but they are much easier to find than the old 30-40 year old 4-speed/OD unit at the same cost.

But with regards to the 6-speed – I’m pretty happy with the 928’s 5 gears I’ve already got and couldn’t see making the swap just for a taller gear.

-In my particular case, a 6th gear would be nearly useless. I use my 928 to drive around town on my days off, and the 6th gear would really only come into useage on the rare long journey on the highway. Unless it was dirt cheap...nah.

I had one of those, the o/d worked on 3rd & 4th so there were 6 choices of forward gear. Good point of the O/D was it gave a fast change.

I am not sure where the 6 gears would go in a 928. Maybe make 3rd a bit lower and drop a new one in between 3rd & 4th?

Basically I would not want 6....

Seems like the answer to a question no one has asked. I can't imagine there is a need for this, the engine doesn't need a 6 speed.

Bill, my problem is I have a 3 speed auto, I don't have a 5 speed car. My automatic has trouble handling the power that I put out, and I'm guessing that I am not the only one on this board that can't safely get the power through the rest of the drive train.

Maybe I should have rephrased the question to be, if you HAD to replace your transmission, would you consider this as an option?

I don't know what you've done to your car so far to improve power, but are you sure a normal 928 5-speed wouldn't work to put the power to the pavement?

To that question - I'd say yes. If there was some sort of benefit. Cost & robustness compared to an original.

Come to California! I get to wind out 4th most of the time and sometimes 5th in search of the WOT! Then you have to slow down to about 3200/3400 in 5th.
