Default Oil

I am picking up my 87 S 4 from Chicago on Sat. I asked the owner about the brand of oil he used and he was not sure. His mechinac did the oil change and he does not know the brand. Any suggestions for a a car with 77K on it? I used Gastrol High Milage on my 951 and was thinking of the same for the 928. Anything special I might want to look at?

Read this thread - also do a search for the preceeding 10 used oil analysis reports from Doug Hillary - Not much else can be said IMHO

I'm not smart enough to use anything but Mobil 1.
Ditto not smart enough to remember which wt, but the cap might be green, or blue? Last one was grey.

I don't believe Mobil 1 was around when our cars were new, not the synthetic's we're using today. My car has 'Shell Products' sticker on the plastic cover under the hood from the factory, perhaps that was their oil of choice at the time.

I have used many 'brands' since owning the 928 including Mobil 1...........now using Castrol Syntec due to pricing and availability.

So Syntec is the way to go?

If you read the attached thread sent by 'Jon of Oz' you'll see the high recommendation for Mobil Delvac 5w40; if you can procure that then it should be your first choice.........if not available I'd get Syntec, Mobil 1 or Shell Rotella.

After sometime of ownership and maintenance you can formulate your own opinion but Doug is seen as the man of the subject.

I just dropped in 9 qts of synthetic.... then i read the oil post...After spending a small fourtune on the synthetic.... The next oil change will be back to go ol fashioned oil pumped out of the ground. I am not sure what blend i will use yet. I think i will use what it says to use in the owners manual.

its my understanding that the engines were built to go 200,000 miles. If this is true 100,000 miles is not a high milage engine in the eyes or porsche, so Im going back to what the guy that built the car says should be in the car.

I run whatever is on sale in synthetics(Mobil/syntec/Valvoline/?) but with a 25 year old car I am worried she will spring leaks with synthetics. Has anyone had a problem putting synthetics in a 77k mile car? It has 20w-50 in it now from PO so I am a tad worried about 5w-50 leaking out. My Hardley Davidson became a fountain when I put Mobil 1 in it at 1000 miles. I would hate to put $40 worth of oil in it only to remove it after 100 miles due to leaks, my car is bone dry as of now.

From Doug's thread:
Bill - Delvac is a Commercial range of ExxonMobil lubricants. They have a long and respected history, Delvac 1 5w-40 has been on sale for nearly 20 years. Only a very few Delvac engine oils are suitable for use in petrol engines. These are the "mixed fleet" formulations as follows;
Delvac 1 5w-40 full synthetic (the subject of this thread)
Delvac 1300 15w-40 mineral oil (a very good product)
In Australia Delvac MX 15w-40 is also a "mixed fleet" oil

Bill, it is always unwise to use a "diesel only" engine oil in a petrol engine due to the complex nature of some formulations and the risk of engine damage caused by high sulphated ash deposits and etc

I switched from dino oil to Mobil 1 15w-50 when I bought my GTS with 103,000 miles and found no new leaks. It now has 140,000 miles and is due this weekend or next for it's 7,000 mile oil change with the same 15w-50 Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic.

20-50w "VR-1" Valvoline Racing Oil for my Shark. Previous owner ran it and I see no reason to change. With 125,000 mi. on the clock it has great compression across the board, does not smoke, purrs like a kitten at idle, but takes off like a cheetah when you stand on it.
