You might get a good example that's caught up on all the preventative maintenance, but when something breaks, it will almost certainly be more than the 951. There's another thread going right now that's an homage to the "education" you get by owning a 928. Tuition can be pricey.

I agree, with $15k a nice 32v is what I would look for.

Some guys are better at hiding things from their wives than others, I would guess that since your asking for ideas in a forum as public as this your probably not very good at it. Rather than make a bad attempt, get caught and be in the proverbial doghouse why not simply come clean with your plan to buy and sell, who knows maybe she'll want the 951 and you can keep both.
Certain things on the 928 are defintely easier to do than a 951 maintenance-wise, the clutch for example. However overall I think the cost is roughly the same, but it really depends on the car you buy and whats required to get it up to spec. Good luck I think you'll really enjoy the 928. I'd try to hold out for a 5-speed so you can really compare the difference between the two cars they really have different personalities.

Hmmm, I know a great way to get a new Vette is to tell your wife you are thinking of buying an old porsche, and pretty soon she will say why don't you just buy a new Vette.
Maybe if you start talking about buying an old boat to restore ...

Here is my break down on a 928S4 Vs 951
Speed,
0-80Mph they are about the same (chipped 951)
80Mph up- 928 is faster
Stability at high Speed- 928 is more stable.
Interior- 928 is nicer inside and has a better build quality. 944 has more head room and the 928 is wider.
Handling- 944 Turbo is lighter and handles better.
Cost per mile- 944 Turbo's are cheaper to run and parts are less expensive. I would say 40% less.
Looks- I like both but my S4 receives 3 x the compliments my 944 Turbo did (Both guards Red)
If you want to meet halfway in S.Dakota I will trade you my 86 928 5 speed
I miss my 951 but I still like 928's a little bit more.

That 15K could get you a $5K 78/79 with low compression & decent cams plus 2.75:1 final drive, $6500 for a stage 2 supercharger plus control regulator, and you'd be close to 300RWHP(a bit more than an S4) in a lighter, more reliable car. Plus you'd still have $3500 to catch up on maintenance, put some new shoes on, etc.
