Help! Help!
Took the cover plate off my 1990 GT diff as it was getting noisy at speeds between 40 and 70mph, suspecting a knackered tapered bearing. The car has done around 360,000km = 225,000 miles...
I was greeted by the sight of chunks of steel missing from some of the teeth!!! I put the cover back on and now the search is on...
I need a "new" crown and pinion for a 1990 GT with PSD and 2.7272 ratio.
Am I dreaming or is there a chance to find one?
Many thanks in advance
Alex

Are these pieces not available from Porsche? It frightens me to think that these parts can not be sourced. If we are to keep these cars on the road we will have to find alternate sources or just watch these beautiful machines become old rusty relics because we can on longer find the parts needed to keep them running. Please tell me there is another source. Some how I'm beginning to think perhaps Porsche just no long wants the reminder of what a failure the 928 is in their mind so they will slowly cause them to become extinct.

Are the straight cut gears in the GTs really that much stronger? Are they noisier?
Seems to me that custom machined gears would be cheaper if straight cut.

Porken,
I don't think they are straight cut. My father has a gear cutting business (large gears, non automotive applications) and from what I picked up from hanging aroudn the shop is that ring and pinion gears can not be "straight cut", but trans gears can. Usually the transmission gears on race cars are straight cut and they are LOUD as hell!

I agree Brendan; we should only support those that care about the 928. If someone can build it and keep the price reasonable I'll be supporting them by buying their parts.

There was somebody on the list looking for a 5th gear for a GT box, maybe you could buy this box to salvage the parts from it. That would be the cheapest way I think.

I would continue to drive the car at present, hopefully I would be able to source a box by the start of the new season... I dread to call Porsche to find out about the price...

The part no is 928 302 911 64 and is listed as 2,024 euro, without tax, which I have to say is not too bad. The reason I say this is that if this was a Ferrari you would be able to buy the part even if you added an extra zero. Remember these crown wheels and pinions are the finest you can buy in the world.
Good Luck

I have found a GT box with 80,000 miles on it... I just don't like the price...

"The final drive ratio is designed 'shorter' and final drive teeth were also changed to the 'Klingelnberg' palloid tooth system successful in racing sport in order to even further improve the car's acceleration."
All you have to do is figure out what that means
