OK, a used cat would be a good next move.

Yes, for the most part.
I wish I had a dyno, but I can not see any way to make one pay for itself at our shop.

a bad cat can actually be worse for emissions, you could always just gut the cats and send her through.

I agree....or you could go with a cat from Magnaflow,autopartswarehouse.com carries them for the `87 TO `89 `S4 for about 80 bucks(part # M6694008) and any muffler shop should be able to install....

The midbed of the cat is what reduces NOX. EDIT: The only way I can imagine a cat worsening emissions would be if it were clogged, and that would be indicative of mixture problems. You would feel it in the performance of the engine in any case.

Bill
How about putting your X-pipe with the high flow cats on and testing that.....those cats should be much cleaner than the old cat anyway? Plus Dr Mike will love the extra HP so much that he'll end up buying one!

Mike got the car smogged. A used cat failed. So, DEVEK installed new cats and that did it. Instead of Porsche, they went aftermarket, saving a lot of money. They don't look like the Random Technology cats. They are larger, about the size of the stock cats. DEVEK did a nice job welding everything together. Mike's happy.

Brian: I missed your last suggestion. That would have been a good trial.

Glad you got it fixed. I think new cats, even aftermarket, are the way to go. Technology has moved along since these cars were built and a modern cat. can solve many emission problems.

Despite trhe frustrations and expense, the whole experience was made better by dealing with wonderful people throughout- hospital politics should be 1/1000
as good.
