That seems like an awful lot to lower only no. Does it have any driveability issues at present ?

 

I was looking carefully at a tire changer and balancer the other day. With the rate at which I consume tires, I think it would pay for itself in 5 or 6 year.

 

You can sometimes find good deals on apparently-good analyzers. I had a good one (Sun) that I used for years, until it came time to start replacing detector modules. $$Ouch!!$$ So it went away, and hasn't been replaced. There are more durable designs these days that don't need quite the same level of care that my old one did, but they are a little steep to just have hanging around.

The guy who does my smog volunteered to do the test with the trans held in second gear on the auto, and it passed NOx easily. Car guy, former 928 owner, businessman.

 

Ew, 5 gas analyzers seem to be a little out of my price range.

 

The emissions testing that we have is not as strict as yours. I guess replacing everything is one approach. If it passes you just dont know what fixed it, or what you did not need to spend.

 

Would a dirty injector cause this?

Have any of you guys tried using a infrared temperature thing, look for a hot or cold spot on the exhaust manifold maybe. I picked up the cheap one at HF for $10, but its too limited in temp range, maybe the deluxe $39 one.

 

In theory it is a good suggestion. No such thing as a cold spot on a manifold. Headers might show a difference. You would need temp. probes on each tube to really see.

 

My money, unfortunately, is on the cats. Mid-beds on these seem to deactivate long before the rest of it. Considering his are original I would concentrate there.

 

Nice idea about the temp of the headers. I do have an one of the IR readers and could have checked that.

Bill - I'm sure he'll end up with a new cat. The car has far less miles than my 89, but we all know my 89 is almost invincible.

 

BTW HF sells a basic tire change rig doesn't it?

I use my $10 IR temp thing for all sorts of stuff, works for radiator hoses, AC vents, PC heatsinks, restaurant buffets. Some cheap video cams also support an IR mode, so a hot/cold spot might show up.

A basic tire changing rig would probably tear up the rim edges.

At this stage of Dr. ***** investigation, please allow me to toss my nickle in with yours - the cats seem suspect.
I've never been convinced that age of cats is as detrimental as having suffered an event, such as a slug of raw fuel, etc: having said that, a used set may be perfectly good and would make for a much cheaper trial .... say a set available from one of the graduates to X-pipe systems ....

 

If you are serious about a gas analyzer you should be able to find one. I have 4 gas one that we never use, they are not as handy as you might think, unless you have a dyno to go with it.

 

We have fixed a lot of cars that would not pass on NOX by replacing the cats, even if they light up, so I am with you on this.

 

Because you cannot get any load on the engine without a dyno?
