HTML Code:
I second the idea to drive it home. Fix or have the timing belt fixed
before you leave, and then drive it back. I've driven mine year round for the
last three years. Buy some snow tires though if you'll be traveling on
ice/snow covered roads
That is exactly what I wanted to write. You will need to fix the Tbelt & Wpump anyway so how much extra to have a mechanic to do it versus the risk of a 32V belt failure??

928 drives great on snow & ice. Just wash it after, especially underneath.

Thanks, Charley. Its stories about delivery and whatnot that can give a car character... sometimes too much.

The '68 bus wasn't even running when I got there. A buddy and I got a on a place with a stack of tools and a starter. I'm actually glad it blew up before we left town, it didn't have any windshield wipers and donner pass was pretty much a nightmare (we ended up renting a u-haul and towing it back). We had left the bus by on the last overpass with the title in the glovebox, figuring it was only a matter of time before it caught fire. Checked with uhaul and found the price for plane tickets was the same as a truck. Figured we drink dinner and drive back in the morning. Around 10pm we got a call - our truck was ready. So we figured we'd better stop drinking! Rented the truck from a lady who also was a breeder for Min. Pinchers. It was surreal, little dogs running all over the place while we were signing the rental agreement - buzzing a bit from the beer.

Then there was the '68 Chevelle I bought at a pawnshop. Blew the motor on the way home. The owner actually put in another 454 V8 for me. Drove it home, never drove it again. Traded the motor to a buddy for a racebik trailer. He proceeded to blow that one up 3 weeks later.

On second thought, mabe you don't want me as your co-pilot.

With 20 years and 40K miles on the belt, I don't dare take the chance of driving her 650 miles on saltcovered roads. Nor do I trust most Porsche mechanics t-belt work except my own. I want to poke around while I'm in there and replace about everything with new. admittedly, I'm more than a bit **** about my cars. I drove the 968 3000 miles home but the belts had been changed not too long before. Of course, I changed them out again when i got home...just to be sure. I've got a lot of stuff to check out before I put in on the road.

I've had 3 transport companies call, except the one that Tom mentions above and I'll keep trying on him because Tom's had good luck with him. Those replying thus far are:
AAA Automovers.com $803
GT AutoTransport $800
Level One Transport $675
Fred Koller...still waiting
Intercity....still waiting
The two first are covered transport but I hear they load/unload/load, etc. Also all say they're insured but the fine print scares me. Also have heard war stories about some carriers. Has anyone experience with any of these? I expect I'll hear from the other two tomorrow. Offhand, it's cheaper than me renting a flatbed and driving down to pick up the rig if you could trust they'd deliver w/o issues.

Hughett,

While I haven't used the transport services of Brian Buxton Enterprises, I did buy my 928 from him (which I drove home 7+ hours, no problems) and can vouch that he's a terrific, honest, and conscientious guy. Here's the link to his website/transport services: http://buxtonmotorsports.com/storage-transportation.php

Oh, and btw, Grand Prix White sharks ARE awesomely easy to keep lookin' great!

AAA certainly is the most agressive of the bunch and seem to be (at least from their web site) to have it together best. But first hand expetrience beats "appearances." I'll be cautious.
