I have a rather interesting situation with my parts car. The sticker in the trunk has option 220 (LSD) but when I lifted the car and spun the tire, the other rotated in the opposite dirrection. As far as I know this is not how a LSD should act. With a limited Slip Diferential, both tires should be spinning in the same directon. Is this correct or am I mistaken?
I've also looked everywhere on the trans and diff cover for a tag to get the build codes but I can't seem to find it. Where is this tag usually located?
I'm starting to suspect that the diferential was replaced at some point with a regular (open end) unit.
Thanks for the info. I should have checked this first before started taking the trans off. I don't know why I didn't check something simpel liek this before doing anything else. Ohh well at it didn't happen when the buyer was picking up the trans.
I found a set of numbers around the crossmemeber, stamped into the transmission housing. Is this only for the trans?
WOW.... I'm 100% sure now that it IS LSD. WOW I learn something new every day!
The buyer suggested to check the trans is different gears to see if the wheels woud spin in a differently. AMAZINGLY they do. When the trans is in park the wheels would spin in the opposite direction to each other BUT THEN when the shifter is moved to any other gear but "Park" the wheels spin in the same directions. Just as a LSD should.
Interestingly when I put the shifter back to P, the wheels would still spin in the same direction for maybe an 1/8 of a revolution then I could hear the parking lock click and then the wheels would (with some resistance) start to turn opposite each other!
By the way the number on the trans casting is: A28/07/12/16600802
I was getting bummed out that I let a buyer beleive that they were buying a LSD trans and I didn't check this earlier.
I'm not up on 928 LSD but in the 968 there are two types of LSD, Torsen and Clutch type. One type rotates wheel opposite direction when other is turned and one doesn't. Confusing.
Zeus+, Thanks, I feel much better knowing it has LSD.
danglerb, Lift up the carpet in the trunk. On the right side you'll find a a littel larger than a credit card sized white sticker. Look for the number 220. Or you can do what I did, lift the car, take the trans out of park and spin the tire.
Lift and spin on my morning plan, then off to the local VW shop (only place I know with the full line in depth of Redline goop) once I know which flavor I want.
In a manual tranny you must have the car in neutral to get an LSD to spin in the same direction. If it is in gear they will spin in opposite directions like an open diff. I would assume this would be the same in an auto.
