Welded cams work well in a race car due to low time at idle...which is hardest on the cam, but not well in a street car.
We only use regound cams with lash caps.
I have one set left off an order of B1 cams ... used in all the highest hp 928 including one Scal racer........11mm, 10mm lifts. With lash caps $1400 exchange.
If anyone wants a set, let me know.

Hi Marc,
So if I wanted these cams would it mean I wasted $400 on having a set of cam caps align bored to match the heads I have....
I had heard that the B1 cams might not be the best option for my motor (104mm bored with 968 pistons, Scat 6wt crank and TBI setup similar to Devek TBI)
Would the B1 cams with lash caps be complete for my installation with everything I would need?

The bigger the cam you start with the less welding you have to do.
If you started with S-4's you wouldn't get the same final specs I got
by starting with GT's & Elgin has a limit as to how much weld thickness
they think is safe to apply. If you started with S-4's Elgin could turn them
into GT's or very close & maybe a little better. I would start with the 85-86,
do the front mod deal and let Elgin take it from there. Dema Elgin did mine
and had to make new master's to get the specs I was after. When he was
done he said ( Boy that was a lot of work, I have to raise my prices -- next
time they'll be $4k ) plus the cams you supply him with. So if your going to
pay for an expensive regrind you might as well get your money's worth
and get some cams that will make a lot more power than a stock profile cam,
especially if its in a stroker.

$4K, is silly, he was probably kidding. Once the masters are made and you know how much to index for the specific application, it's fairly easy to grind a cam. Why did he say it was hard, was the camshaft alloy a bear to grind? Was it a funky hard weld build up?

Speaking of billet cams, in 1990 I was talking to Bob Walter of Logicam about making some for an 85 I had at the time, I was going to supply blanks and he was going to grind them. Does anyone know if Bob is still around? It would be a treat to talk to him again.
I am working on a set of 'modular' cams now and will be glad to share results once I have something. Basically it will be lobes installed on a hollow shaft.

this is some great info on cams and specs. as i understand it the massive cost involved in making billet cams is due to the toothed gear that the cam chain runs on, i think sterling posted pics of a cam that had this part bolted on and the bolts were shearing or something.. sounds as if lash caps and reduced base circle might be more reliable for a street driven car - if the welded cams are not strong enough for an engine at idle??

Why difficult, It's very time consuming & labor intensive - Then they
have to apply the hard surface. Just look at the picture Hacker put up
on pg 1, every single lobe is perfect. He'll be putting up more pics of all
four cams later, seeing the cams in person - you can understand and
appreciate what it took to make them look that way & the specs achieved.

Oh, if it involves welding and hard surfacing that would be alot of work and explain the cost. I do agree that if you want to make serious power you have to pony up for cams in one way or another, the exhaust especially would like to have more duration.

Guys how wide is the area that needs to be increased(thrust area) on the 85 86.5 cams? Is it 18 mm? Then does is go to 28 mm, I can remember increasing it 10 mm but can't recall exactly. Anybody out there even with the S4 spec and I will work backwards.
