Default H4 question?

Hi I have a 1990 928GT right hand drive and I want to replace the head lights. I priced out the RHD and LHD H4's and the RHD versions are much more expensive. Why is that? Can I use the LHD H4's on my car?

You can but the way the glass is cut it will be putting the light right into oncoming traffic, well providing you drive on the wrong side of the road in Hong Kong.

Thumbs down

They will fit fine - but realistically you can't. LHD's are cheaper only because many more are made. The construction is basically the same but the pattern is reversed. Not only will they be a major source of glare for oncoming traffic - as Shane says - but you will have very poor (as opposed to excellent) roadside sign illumination. Don't do it!

Thanks for the reply’s guy's the car now resides in Vancouver Canada so maybe the LHD H4's would be a better option as the car is driven on Canadian roads. I am currently making a list of things to change on my next trip back to Vancouver. Can anyone tell me if the tail lights are the same on RHD 928's? The part numbers I was quoted at Porsche in Hong Kong is different than the number on the 928 International web site.I checked the tail light pattern on my car from a picture and could not see any difference.

Dan - then you absolutely should have LHD H4's... The tail lights are the same for LHD/RHD for ROW only the USA LHD's are different. You have ROW (Euro) lighting and there are differences but you do not need to change (unless you are forced to).

e.g. You have rear fog lamps - US does not and the bulbs are configured differently - you should have stop lights only (with no combo markers) in the inboard position, possibly no central brake lamp, Your aux front lights, front turn signals and side indicators are all slightly different - but really no need to do anything about it.

Alan, are you sure about the rear fog lights on the ROW '87+ MY's??

My Japan-spec car doesn't have them, and neither does pasa's GT if that's a pic of it in post #6.

My car is absent the bumperettes front and rear, and has the proper euro side-marker lights and carries the ZZZ serial number.

Pasa's GT in post 6 appears to have the same lights as my Euro (UK) 88SE and 90GT - both have rear foglights.

Brake lights are the innermost pair

tail lights are the middle pair and outer pair

Fog lights are the 21W bulb in the outer pair.

Lightbulb

Brian,
You should have them unless it was a specific delete for Japan - as Jon says these are not seperate fogs like on the OB's they are integrated into the tail cluster and are dual filament bulbs 5W for the marker light and 21W when in fog mode.

Real indicator for this is the pod switches you have on the left below the light switch. Typicaly ROW/Euros have Lights/Front Fog&Drv/Rear Fog, USA cars have Lights/Front Fog&Drv/Odo Reset

On ROW 1987 its a little push-button switch under the dash somewhere - on the digidash versions (89+) its a dedicated switch next to the variable dash lighting behind the left column stalk.

So you have rear fogs?

On '89 MY odo reset is in center console. New style pod buttons came to all cars when airbags were introduced for US in '90. LHD ROWs got bags in '91 and RHD even later in first two GTS years.
