I agree with Brett that at 145mph, the 928 is really finds its "comfort zone" and it's a surprisingly smooth ride. Hugs the road like it's got magnets pulling at the ground.
On the other hand, I once had a '32 Plymouth Street Rod with a 'vette engine that, at 125mph, you could turn the steering wheel either direction and it would continue straight forward. Those huge fenders were acting as wings and I slowed down quickly to 80mph...where it still sounded like i was still going faster than the 928 at 150mph. The 928 is a class act. However, you do have to have your tires well balanced at those speeds. Even little variances show up.

Ok I don’t mind admitting that I’m no expert at driving above 110mph. Oh sure I’ve been a passenger in a number of cars at speeds in excess of that but rarely have I ventured beyond that. So when I have it’s only been on vacant highways in the middle of nowhere.
Prior to my 78’ 928 I’ve only had a couple of vehicles that I ever even consider taking above 100mph for extended periods. The first was my 69 Firebird and looking back that probably wasn’t the smartest thing I ever did. Next would have to be my 67 Barracuda and then my 76’ Yamaha DOHC 500cc motorcycle. Again not too smart of moves - as none of those vehicles was really intended for those speeds for extended periods. But in my own defense in all those cases I was way too young & dumb to know any better and consider myself lucky to be here today.
As for the 928 I’ve had it up to 110+ several times with the highest speed having to be about a 115mph. Granted I’ve been told that a well sorted out 78’ Shark of that vintage should be able to do 140 but I’m too much of a chicken-$hit to try without someone more knowledgeable going over the vehicle with me first and possibly giving me some informal training before I make such an attempt.
As for the stability of the 928 at speed all I will say is that of all the vehicles I’ve driven at speed it seems the smoothest. I drove a 2000 Dodge Intrepid @ 110+ and it seemed somewhat comfortable. But when I pushed it a little further it felt like it was hanging on by it’s fingernails and was about to come apart at the seams. Whereas the Shark seemed to take speeds above 110 in stride and didn’t seem to break a sweat at all. In fact she felt like she wanted to keep going and could maintain those speeds all day long.
Perhaps once I've had a chance to sort out my Shark's Suspension and brakes (Wheels & tires & the engine don't seem to have problems with high speeds) I’ll consider pushing the envelope.

Studs have nasty habbit of flying away above 100 mph
I would try that on one of those big frozen lakes in Northern Canada but not on a road.
Last time I was in Stockholm I was being driven to the city in a Mercedes taxi in a snowstorm doing circa 70mph, I was pretty nervous until we were overtaken by the airpot bus. That was when I decided to lie back and enjoy it.

Brett,
I was on a motorcycle at 146mph once and a small bug hit me in the forehead (I had goggles...and, arguably, was dumber then) and the bug hurt like heck and left a bruise. It was starting to get too scary, particularly for a sober guy, so I backed off and have never did that again. I had a (former) friend splat a wall at over 100mph. Wasn't a lot to put in the funeral home.
At any high speed run, tires are REALLY important. I'm not sure what tires are used in the Nevada road races but a few years ago, a (more modern) Porsche blew a front tire at over 200mph (?) and the driver was killed. At those speeds your life is riding on the tires and stable suspension.

My gearbox is a M2822-82G.....A2808-11G
Which has a 2.357 ratio....which I figure if I have done the maths correctly will give a theoretical 225 mph top speed...
I may cheat a little by running higher profile tyres on my 18 x 10 rears....but not sure if it will make much difference...
All the best Brett

According to the figures published by your US National Safety Council; your lifetime odds of dying in a motor accident are 1 in 84. This means it is almost certain....
the link is http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm
Doesn't seem that driving fast will change these odds very much?
Marton
Just because I posted these numbers does not mean that I believe them or will defend them.....

Anyway the buffeting was so harsh that I was afraid to let go of the handle bars to pull my helmet down. So I had to tilt my face & helmet down so I could see. Once I slowed (in what seemed like an eternity) to about 70 I was able to reach up and pull my helmet down. I pulled off to the side and connected my chin strap and then turned myself around and went home to drink a beer & change my soiled skivies.
I never rode my bike again after that without my brain bucket firmly secured noodle.

My 928 S2 will do 270 km/h, according to the book and what people have said here. I went 135 mph while disciplining a late four-door Jaguar one day, and used the turn signal to emphasize his Ford's inadequacy. Then another day: I took a late model Mitsubishi Eclipse and this car couldn't be shut down- another 135 mph escapade, when his rev limiter kicked in and my V8's didn't.
