Why yes. According to Carfax it's a 4.8l 12v model. How those valves are shared by 8 cylinders I don't know. Or is it 12 on each cylinder?

VIN WP0JB0928GS862268
Year/Make/Model: 1986 PORSCHE 928S
Body Style: COUPE
Engine Type: 4.8L V8 FI SOHC 12V

Seriously, how about a hint. What's supposed to be rare about it?

It was made in 1986 and since the serial number is 2268 it is in the later half of the year which means yes it is a '86.5 which has the bigger brakes, suspension etc.

I think Preferred might be more accurate than Rare.

All 928s are "rare" the first 1000 USA 86 cars have 1985 suspension and brakes. Most 86 928s were automatics. About 25,000 cars were sold in the US about 17,000 are still registered. Those who favor the early body style like the 86.5 as the best of the early cars with the much better brakes 288 hp 5 liter engine stronger syncros in the rare 5 speed cars etc... But note that rare does not mean valuable , desirable or collectible simply means they sold very few..... Yugos are now rare

292 HP on 10:1 32V US engines (288 on the 9.3:1 32V engines sold ROW).

(OK, four HP, but 292 sounds muy macho. )

With the possible exception of parts cars and very low mileage collectible models, the "value" of a 928 is only established by a thorough professional inspection requiring a couple hours or so of a knowledgeable 928 mechanics time, and a couple hundred, or so, of your dollars.

Search around a bit and you will find some check lists that are good for weeding out cars that a PPI (pre purchase inspection) would kick away, and avoid the expense, but your love better be the forgiving type if you buy a 928 and inspect later.

I thought the 288 was the US car and 310 was the Euro S2 '86 with the 16v motor?

'86.5 i the best of both worlds for the S4 suspension/brakes and the OB body style. A stand out among the crowd of 928 years, but not particualrly worth more than as S4 or later.

Hp numbers are little confusing. List below has all numbers in DIN format:

SAE net hp is measured slightly differently than above DIN's which aren't what people are used to in USA. 292 DIN = 288 SAE net. So both are correct for '85-86 US 32V S, just different standards.

Same thing for '84-86 ROW 16V S at 310 DIN = 306 SAE net and then there is '86 ROW 32V S at 288 DIN = 284 SAE net.

corrected power is 292 ...not 288 as I posted does point out that dropping the compression from 10:1 down to 9.3:1 only lost 4 horsepower.

Jim, I'm not sure if you mean SAE net or DIN with 292? In any case, tech spec book figures are in DIN and it says 292 which is 288 in SAE Net.

Drop of only 4 hp for so large compression change is strange.
