Default Timing Belt on 16V engines

I recently acquired a MY '84 928S that needs a water pump. I decided to do the whole nine yards (TB/WP/Tensioner rebuild) while I am in there and in the process of reading all the information on the websites on how to do this I came across the tip of setting the engine at 45deg so the cams do not move (I am following John Pirtles Timing belt replacement in 175 easy steps). In the section on removing the belt he discusses setting the engine to the 45deg marks!!

Looking at my harmonic balancer though; there are no 45deg marks!! Only 20, 10, 0T(TDC), 10, 20.

So my question, is the 45deg tip only for the 32V engines?
(I presume this only becuase Johns procesure is for MY87).

If I can do this on the 16V engine - how do I find 45deg?
if it is not possible or practical, then do you have to fight against the lobs of the cams on the 16V to get them into position to attach the belt?

Does anyone have a full step-by-step procedure for 16V Timing belt/WP/Tensioner rebuild? (I checked the one on Greg Nichols site and it is only a retensioning procedure - not the full replacement and the workshop manuals have nothing for 16V disassmbly only installing and tensioning).

Many thanks to everyone for help,

Unless your 84 is a Euro, just set it to TDC and don't worry. Even if it is a Euro, use TDC, but be careful not to let the cams jump too far. The 45degree mark was added for 32V interference engines which yours should not be. The fight against the cam lobes is a very minor one. Mine only jumped a few teeth and were easily set back straight using the counterhold nut on the cam.

I didn't find a complete 16V procedure when I did mine. It's the same as the 32V procedure except for the 45* thing, and you have less parts to take off and put on.

PS: Post where you live and maybe somebody will volunteer some local help.

Porken is in that area and very knowledgable about the 16V timing belt system. If he starts suggesting mods, just say NO.

Here is the 16V Timing Belt procedure. As I recall the 2/0 is the 45 mark but have Porken or Louie confirm. I am out of town all week or I would help. If you don't have it back together by next week drop me a PM.

Thanks for all the help.
Just before I got the first car in August ('81), I went to the Porsche swap meet in September here in Beaverton and met a few people. One guy I met (think his name was Pat) mentioned Louie Ott. Besides that I know no one, so it would be reallt great to meet anyone around that is nto 928 or even Porsche period (I have a '79 924 projcar also).

Thanks again,

Sounds like a get together is in order. Haven't had one in the Rose City for awhile.

Jim_H,

I checked the site you suggested and it is the one in Greg Nichols site.
This looks like just a retensioning procedure, is there something I am missing on the page??

Thanks,

I can't read that blue, a color blindness thing... I would send Porken a PM. I haven't done a 16V...yet. I'm guessing you are in the North Plains area?

I'm scared of Highway 26, man. Too many bears out there.

Highway 26!!! - thats the LONG way around (even though its a straight shot). TV highway is faster than 217 to 26!!! Besides past Hillsboro I just take the backroads!

Im out in the country here.

PorKen - I hear you are the 16V guru of the Northwest - got any good tips on Timing Belt/ Wp/ Tensioner rebuilding that would help me?

Tom,

It's much easier than you might think. The system is quite simple, really. Once you get the covers off you'll see.

Change the crank seal if you haven't yet.

The right (passenger) cam is squirrelly when trying to pull the belt around. You may find that it's off a tooth when you rotate the engine.

You don't have emissions out there...so there's plenty of things you can remove for storage!
